Creating POI files

Is there a poi base of high crime areas in the US? Seems like it would be a good thing to have when traveling and looking for places to eat etc.

This might be a newbie (aka dumb) question, but I want to set up 1 proximity alert in a POI file of about 30 entries. I do not want to rename the file name with a numeric, just generate 1 entry in that POI file with an alert of about 2 miles. Given my file has the format (LON,LAT,NAME,ADDR), what format would I use for that 1 entry?

I've downloaded POI loader to my desktop. When I try to run POI Loader it says it can't find my device. I have it plugged up. I have rebooted my pc. My device is turned on. I just downloaded the current software for my device today. I have a eTrex-Vista. Any suggestions?? Thanx.

I downloaded a 398 Kb file called RetailStores.ov2; when I try converting it to .csv using POI Converter, it gives me an overflow error. Is there a program out there that will convert .ov2 to .csv, regardless of the initial .ov2 size? Thanks

i can download my gpx files to my garmin 650 but the .gpi files in the same file will not download. What am I doing wrong?

I've been reading a lot of posts on how to do this. Am I correct in saying that you need a .bmp or a .mp3 file for EACH poi file?

Say you have a folder with 10 different restaurants, and you want the same icon to apply to all of them. You will need to rename the same .bmp file 10 times, effectively increasing memory usage tenfold?

there is a listing for lakes, streams and ponds, but the files are zip files. When i tried to load them on my garmin the would not load. How can I change them to the standard file for garmin...???? Help

I downloaded calistga wineries poi file which is in XML format. I tried to install it into my Nuvi 680(Using the POI loader), but I don't see it.

Assuming that the Nuvi does not recognize xml, how can I convert to garmin csv or other readable file?

I wanted to load the Lighthouses POI files into a StreetPilot 2620. When I started the Garmin POI loader, and asked it to find the GPS, I received an error message, "Some devices were found, however none have the necessary capabilities...." Is there some other loader available which will accomodate the 2620, or am I just SOL?

So I decided I will try my hand at creating some POI files. Since I recently got stopped by cop near a school zone in the neighboring town I figured it would be nice to get a school zone POI file. Could not find anything free and did not want to pay for a file without knowing how much of my surrounding area was covered (Tewksbury, MA)

I want to see custom poi in my NUVI660 like following:

I was wondering what are the most common POI file types used in the USA.

I know most Garmins use .csv and TomTom's use .ov2.

If you have any knowledge of the more common types used I really would like to know.

I am wondering if there are any POIs for psp? or program I can transfer the files to psp POI.

Is there a way to have Alerts pop up for some POI's and not for others? In my case, I can either turn Alerts on or off. If on, ALL my POIs alert me. Every gas station, restaurant, store, bank, red light, covered bridge, waterfall, you name it. I get a tone and a pop-up alert when I get near them. Or if I turn proximity alerts off, then I get no notification whatsoever.

So If you build and install a White Castle USA file,an you look thru your list of POI's and you CHOOSE White Castle,and looked thru the list of White Castles,would you prefer to see "White Castle then as you look closer the address" or "Evansville,IN and then the address" or nothing.Everyone does it different and I'm still not sure how I like to see it or which is the most clarity in reading the P
