Creating POI files

With the ever increasing number of POI Files being uploaded, should we be looking at some appropriate naming convention?

There are folks with GPS from parts of the world other than the US (I.e. a file named "starbucks" for instance might relate to any number of countries).

I just purchased my first GPS, a Garmin c530. I have successfully downloaded a list of Wifi Hotspots for the Atlanta area. When I touch Where to, then Extras, I see “Custom POI’s, but no title. In other words nothing to indicate the following list is a listing of WiFi Hotspots. So, my question is there a way to name POI lists with a Garmin c530?

I've downloaded some UK POI files from another site. I've tried installing them using POI loader (latest) and they appear in the folder I created "Europe". The titles, ie. "UK - Museums" are listed, but when I tap on the POI, I get the message, NO MATCHES FOUND. I've tried moving them into the root directory on the SD card...no luck.

I am trying to import a excel file into my 680. I have installed POI Loader on my computer and have saved the excel file to a .csv file. However, I keep getting an error message that reads "problem copying data to card. Device not ready"

enter any zip (i.e. 92843) code and u get several rows that has st name; description; city; and zip. the two important info are the st. name and the description.

I may have hit a technical "wall" with POILoader. On my PC, within my main GPS_POI folder, I have a sub-folder that has a combined total of 33 .csv/.gpx files ( NOT POIs, just files ). Even with POILoader v2.4.2, I get an error pop-up that says I cannot have more than 32 files in a subdirectory.

When I moved the "excess" files into another sub-folder, POILoader completed without complaints.

Once I create a custom POI with long/lat/name in a csv file, what is the best way to verify the physical locations? I thought of using Google Earth.

I'm trying to create my own POI files (for a C330). I'm using Excel and the location shows on the map, but not the NAME. My format looks like this:

Lat Lon NAME

each in a separate column. Any help would be appreciated.

I am interested in a comprehensive golf course POI, mainly for the SW USA. I am just new to discovering POI and would even be interested in trying to make one myself. Are there step by step instructions on how to create a POI, without physically going to all the sites?

Hi can someone please help me with this. I have downloaded the CA.Wineries file from 5Thumbs. The POI loader shows over 600 of the waypoints are entered, but I can only see 10 pages of them ,which is 50. Were could the rest of these waypoints be? And I use a NUVI 360.

I recently purchased a Garmin 350 nuvi. Using the POI down loader program, I down loaded a banking location POI file which showed up as a Excell spread sheet. I changed Lat - Long & Location Data & save in a new file "Chase Banks". After data transfer to the nuvi 350, there was not any data shown. Only the title was present. What am I doing wrong?

Hey guys. I'm a driver in and around the Calif., Nevada, Utah, and Arizona area... Does anyone know of a POI list that shows DOT Scales and Major Truck Stops? I've looked around and found only a few minor truck stops as POI's.... Thanks for any help...

I am a new nuvi 350 owner and have been playing with the whole custom POI thing. I have POI LOader 2.4.2 loaded, and a 4GB SD card (which seems to work ok).

I have several questions:

Is it possible to convert Waypoints from a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 to POI's for a Nuvi 670? I've looked at a number of converters and no luck yet.

How do u convert location data from degrees format to decimal coordinate format?

Hi all I am a newbie, I am trying to create a custom POI file from a csv file. My problem is with the description (column D) I can not seem to create a POI with a description longer than 256 characters, (Many of the geocache descriptions are longer than 256 characters). Is this just something I have to live with or is there a work around??

Is there a max size(KBs) or a max number of POIs that the Garmin POI file can hold?

Has anyone found a POI listing for the Elks Campgrounds across the U.S.?

I would not try making a new POI but I can get a list of campgounds if someone else wants to undertake the project. We travel and use them all the time as they are everywhere- and very reasonable fees for camping- usually a small donation for their services - IF YOU ARE AN ELK MEMBER

I have several csv files of some custom POI's that I want to combine into a single file using Excel (Mac version. So I copied and pasted the lines from several file into a single file. Using POILoader,for some reason, I only see the POI in the first row of the Excel csv file.
