256 Character Limit

Hi all I am a newbie, I am trying to create a custom POI file from a csv file. My problem is with the description (column D) I can not seem to create a POI with a description longer than 256 characters, (Many of the geocache descriptions are longer than 256 characters). Is this just something I have to live with or is there a work around??

It can be done...

The 4th column of a csv file is placed in the Comment/Description field of POI.GPI by POI Loader. On your Nüvi 360, this data is displayed at the top of the screen, underneath the name of the POI.

On the Nüvi 3xx, the field is truncated to some size or other (I thought it was less than 256 chars.) and the rest of the information is discarded.

It turns out that there is a field that is not truncated in this manner, but you can't access it using csv files.

On a Nüvi 3xx, the "email" field (accessible using a gpx file as input to POI Loader) is displayed as the last item and is not truncated.

I've not actually measured it for the Nüvi 3xx, but the Streetpilot C5xx can display descriptions of upto 5620 bytes, before it eventually surrenders. You can write quite a lot in 5620 bytes ;-), and if you use some html markup, you can make it look very professional.

My GeePeeEx Editor will allow you to store your descriptions in this field and will do this automatically, if you select Nüvi 3xx as the "Target Device". (i.e. You type it into the description box and it flips it to the email field. When you subsequently re-edit the file, it recognises its handiwork and flips it back again)

Thanks

I went to your site and downloaded the trial version, and test drove it. It worked nicely, so I purchased the full version.

Thanks again

No 256 character limit

I recently learned how to create CSV files for my Garmin 1340 by reading various posts here at POI-Factory. When I read about 256 characters being the maximum limit in columd D, I naturally stuck to this principle when creating them.

But after adding over 200 POIs I got the idea of going beyond the 256 character limit just to test it. That was no problem at all on my nuvi 1340, and I now have descriptions going up to 995 characters, which I find very useful in giving background information about my POIs.
