XML files

I downloaded calistga wineries poi file which is in XML format. I tried to install it into my Nuvi 680(Using the POI loader), but I don't see it.

Assuming that the Nuvi does not recognize xml, how can I convert to garmin csv or other readable file?

try renaming the file extension

to gpx instead of xml - if the original xml file has all the correct syntax for a gpx file, POI Loader will be able to handle it, and it will show up on your GPSr.

XML Files

I couldn't save as a gpx file so I just changed the file extension to gpx.

It worked. The items in the file appear in the Extras on the Nuvi 680.

Thanks very much for your help!!

Michael

Yeah, you can't save a gpx

Yeah, you can't save a gpx file in Excel, you should have done it as a csv.

Although, I didnt know the xml and gpx are basically the same format. THat is cool that worked.

XML is a language

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is an open standard, general-purpose markup language with a main purpose to facilitate the sharing of data across different information systems. GPX is an XML document conforming to the semantic rules specified by schemas from Topographix.com and Garmin (for waypoint extensions).

XML Editor

You won't see things in a column with XML. Items have opening and closing tags. I usually use Textpad (a text editing program from www.textpad.com) or XMLSpy (from www.anova.com) to edit GPX files.

I just put together this afternoon a little Q&D (as in 'Quick & Dirty') app that open a GPX into an Excel-like view. Each row represents a location. You can add, change & delete rows and save them to a GPX file. The only required columns are: lon, lat & name. All other columns are optional. If you want to use the dial feature, enter the number in the phone column with 999-999-9999 format. This is stricly use at your own risk since I only spent about 1/2 day. Interested?

Warning. This little utility only gives you similar approach as editing CSV file with MS-Excel for GPX. It does NOT perform any data verification. It's 'garbage-in, garbage-out'. If you're looking for any verification capability, then I suggest you look into RT's POIVerifier.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my web site, so send me your email address to me via POI Factory (click on my username above and select the 'Contact' tab) and I can email it to you.

Those interested will have better luck looking for Altova's XMLSpy here:
