Creating POI files

Garmin allows you to by new maps and you then get all the new POI's to boot.

I wish they would offer you the option to just update the POI's for a small charge when you want to.

Would that be a CRAZY Idea. Does anyone offer list as extensive as what garmin has in total for POI's that can be purchased instead of loading a few here a few their.

I'm dealing with a website that lists their locations as city links; to get at the addresses I need to open each link manually, copy the contents, and navigate back to select the next city in the list - and there are a lot of them.

This would be a lot easier if I could expand the whole list of links at once, perhaps into an output file.

Has anyone used or heard of such a tool?

Which of the sites listed in the FAQ here on creating POI files / finding coordinates of an address is the most accurate? I tried a few different ones out, and each gave me slightly different results.

For example:

1331 S. Nicholson Ave.
Santa Maria, CA 93454

Site 1: -120.416894, 34.937671
Site 2: -120.417002, 34.937425

Wanting to get some wav files up and running but per my understaning I need to load the sox.exe file into the Garmin POI Loader.

I can handle doing this (Garmin Nuvi 200) and realize it is necessary to get my wav files to actually work with my proximity alerts.

(1.) I have not installed a SD card yet but if I do will it allow for me to store more poi's on it?

(2.) Will the garmin POI loader know to load to the SD card or will it try to load to the internal memory like usual?

How much internal memory is allowed on the 200 so I can see if I am getting close?

Am I correct that the custom POI file gets entirely re-written each time you load. Seams like I can not add just one new file or then thats all I have when I do that and the rest are gone.

Hope the way I have described this makes sence.

I am getting my feet wet with Loding poi's. I am fairly comfortable with loading but alerts are a different matter.

I can load manual, automatic and or place redlight in the title of those I want to alert with no problem.

Hey i just bought a nuvi 765t and i transfered all the pois from this site to the unit express mode. The only problem is what i want it to do is when i get close to those places it will alert me on the top banner or somewhere on the screen with no beeping. Can someone explain how to go about doing this. Thanks, Andrew

How do I make my garmin use a sound file with an associated POI?

I'm new to this and not really sure how this works...
It alerts me on the POI's but it dings at me instead of playing the sounds I have loaded on the SD card.

I h ave tried to creat custom poi file. I created one for my home with the following names:
My_Home_Redlight.csv
My_Home_Redlight.wav

I used the garmin poiloader to load it to a sd card. I then put sd card in the nuvi 255 w and it asked me if I wanted to install it and I said yes.

I have the proximity icon and it says the file is loaded, but it doesn't do anything when I approach home.

I was driving eastbound on US 60 (5 lanes each direction) through Phoenix and was getting speed camera alerts when the cameras were actually in the westbound direction.
Has this been a problem?

I am having a hard time creating a POI file that allows me to use use Proximities.

Here is a sample of what I have for the file:

-119.28,46.3,"Timbers Apartments","1900 Stevens Drive
Richland WA 99354

I tried using:

-119.28,46.3,"Timbers Apartments@25","1900 Stevens Drive

At the suggestion of other folks on the forum I have installed Position Finder into Google Maps, but I'm having a problem with it.

If I enable Position Finder in My Maps and then use the "Search Maps" text box and button, My Maps closes. If I find the position first and then open My Maps, the position marker disappears.

I'd appreciate some insight into what I'm doing wrong.

Installed some new POIs along with icons. Renamed the icons to match the .csv files, however when viewing the icons on the map their color has a strong green tint to it.

Can anyone shed some light as to why this is happening?

Only one of the icons of the many that I used looks perfect.

I don't see any other fools using CoPilot! I'm not very savy with this stuff, but the manual says that it accepts POIs on OV2 format. This hasn't worked.

All of the other POIs are in CFG format.

Can I convert the US Weigh Station POI which is in CSV format to CFG format?

i was wondering if someone could create thermoking dealers poi files.which is for tri pacs on trucks and reefers on trailers , that would be great i drive a semi and could really use this file your truck stop files really come in handy thnx alot guys for the files we all have.

I am trying to add a walmart to the walmart POI file. The location's address is 1060 South Watson, Buckeye, AZ 85326, (623) 474-6728. I am went to the store and it lists the coordinates on my Nuvi as 33°26.271, 112°33.550. Well I entered -112.33386 and 33.26224. I figured that's how I need to convert it for the bottom line. Well that brings me to some other place.

This morning I submitted my first POI file and since it did not appear right away I assume it is being vetted by site staff - no complaints there.

Just wondering how long it usually takes between the submission of a POI file and its appearance on the site.

I've made an Add-In for Excel that converts gpx files to csv or tab files and loads them into Excel. I think it's a good compliment to Extra POI editor, GeePeeEx, etc. when you want to mess with large groups of POI's.

I am going to generate some POI files for my trip to Italy.
They take up less space then waypoints.
Since I am creating these for myself, no reason not to share then.
However I know there are some rules about what can be posted.
Since they are for my personal use, I am not concerned how I get them.
