Creating .CSV POI files with Proximity enabled. [Garmin Nuvi 200]

I am having a hard time creating a POI file that allows me to use use Proximities.

Here is a sample of what I have for the file:

-119.28,46.3,"Timbers Apartments","1900 Stevens Drive
Richland WA 99354
866-354-0777"

I tried using:

-119.28,46.3,"Timbers Apartments@25","1900 Stevens Drive
Richland WA 99354
866-354-0777"

Unfortunately it does not load onto my Garmin Nuvi 200 with the proximities enabled. Instead it will show as Timbers Apartments@25

Could someone please help me either set it up for distance and/or speed?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not an expert in this, but I believe to have the @25 trigger an alert, your file needs to be named using one of the codewords for speed. Other words that trigger distance alerts have to do with red light cameras.

I believe the only way you can trigger an alert on an individual item in a file is to create a GPX with the alert information coded into the item.

Use Manual Mode

Use the Manual mode instead of the Express mode in POI Loader when loading your CSV file.

You will be able to select Distance or Speed.

Speed Alert set at 0 MPH will always alert.

Setting Proximity Alert

One solution would be to use the Garmin POILoader and manually load the POI. Check "This file contains proximity alerts points" and then set the distance on the alert.

What are you using to make a

What are you using to make a custom poi file?Excel, notepad or something else? What I see in your post will not work.It should look like this. -119.284627,46.300504 Timbers Apartments 1900 Stevens Drive Richland WA 99354 866-354-0777 .You will need to set up your file on your computer and run poiloader in the manual mode to set the alerts. You can also use a key word like redlight or like you have @25 to the title of the custom poi.

Did you save as a csv file?

Ok, I have been using manual

Ok, I have been using manual mode, but wanted to try and streamline it as much as possible. The problem I am facing is that I need to set different distances for different areas depending on the density of the area.

I have it saved as a CSV, in fact if you do a search for apartments.csv (I think that is the name), I uploaded it.

Your coordinates appear to be well off the street. For a proximity alert to trigger, the location must be along the route of travel and within approximately 50 ft of the street (I suggest the curb at the entrance to the parking lot).

The coordinates

The coordinates -119.284627,46.300504 is what I got from yahoo and google shows -119.2847964,46.3003757

Edit. This is how it shows on Google http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=...

The address is off of geocoder.us... I did a test and it appears that it does work w/o actually going to the curb.

What do you mean it works? You said it wouldn't alert? What am I missing?

@ is for Speed

The @ symbol is for speed which is not the same as proximity. Two different items, although slightly related.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Off of a street

When I checked it with the 2009 Garmin map set, it is off the road. Thus it may or may not trigger an alert.

I always check with a Garmin map, ie MapSource, when I am making my POIs to make sure the lat/long is placed properly.

That's due to the error difference between the two different maps.
