New tool for pulling POI coordinates right from Goofle Earth

I wrote an application that allows you to pull the Lat and Lon from Google Earth and add a name, and an address to make a POI file. If there is interest, and if I am allowed to upload it, I would be happy to share it. It really helped me with two of my custom POI files ("PittsburghPA", and "OhioUniversity")

New Tool

Mike, that sounds like a great tool. Would love to have it.

Thank you
Harold

You might want to take a look at this thread link

You might want to take a look at this thread link to a free program used to create POI files. It ties in directly with Google Maps from within the program to insert the coordinates after you enter any address. Everything can be done from within the program itself including viewing the location on the map and even moving it to adjust for corrections to the exact location.

Wow... can't compete with that.... :)

Mine was pretty simple and came out of necessity. Extra POI Editor looks fantastic. Think I'll start using it instead smile

Harold: If you'd still like my much lamer application, I'd be happy to send it to you

Edit:
After using Extra POI Editor for a couple of minutes, I can see that my app still has a place with people like me who want to work at a little lower level for some reason. I'd still like to make it available if that's possible

Mike

My word, what TALENT depth there is on this forum!

I am very impressed with the talent demonstrated here every day. With all the worker bees flying around, I must find something I can do to contribute to the colony.

Thanks for enriching the honey in the hive.

I posted it on a website

I have finally found a place to post the application:

http://sites.google.com/site/raptorbase/

It's in the GEgrab.zip file. Download it to a folder, Unzip it, and run the Setup.exe file.

You can use this to just hand enter the Lat/Lon/Name/Comment into a CSV file, or click on the 'Listen' button at the top. Google Earth should open (if not open already) and now GEGrab is listening for you to press [F6] when you are in GE.
Make sure that you make the point you want be what GE is focused on. A way to do this is to double-click the point you want the lat/lon for. When you
press [F6], the GEGrab window will reappear with the
desired coordinate in the Lat/Lon columns. Now you can enter a name and a comment. Then, click "Go to GE", or just bring GE back to the front and continue on.

Hope you find it useful. It's not as glamorous as Extra_POI, but it's great for quickly getting points into a file. I used it for my OhioUniversity.CSV file that I posted in the POI section.

Mike

thanks for the tool.

Just What I needed! I am more or less making POI files manually. Pen and paper method, very few addresses in order to search for coordinates, and here you come! Thanks alot, easy to use! Thanks, thanks and thank grin grin grin you again!!

If you have the time, consider to add the edit tool, for ex.: copy, paste, placing the cursor in already written text/co-ordinates etc. idea

yes

Yeah, I'll just replace the ZIP file with a new one, and I'll add a new ZIP file that will just have the .EXE file in it so you won't have to do a full install. I got the sort and the duplicate thing done, but could you be a little more specific about what kind of copy/paste capability you wanted? It already has some capability: if you
work in Excel and copy a block, it will paste the block in (At least it should... smile )

You are right: If I save the file as a csv file in GEGrab and open this file in Excel, I can do whatever I want. No problem.
But if I try to edit in your software, GEGrab, for example, after enter a street name, and try to edit the spelling or something, I can't enter the text with my cursor, have to rewrite the cell again! I can't highlight the content of a cell and copy or enter the empty cell and paste. Sometimes it is convenient to add for example addresses while you are finding co-ordinates, and not wait until you have the file opened in Excel.
A funny thing (maybe it's a local problem): If I try to open a saved file in GEGrab, I get the correct longitude data but zeroes where I expected the latitude data?
But no problem, I can manage as it appears now, GEGrab is an enormous help!

If you hit [Enter] or [F2]

If you hit [Enter] or [F2] it should let you edit the contents of the cell.

I haven't seen the problem you are experiencing with the 0's for latitude. I'll look into it though
EDIT: Found and fixed!

One way around the copy thing in the meantime is to hit [F2] or [Enter] to edit the cell, hit CTRL-C to copy the contents then CTRL-V to paste them in a new cell...

EDIT:

Just uploaded the new version of the app to the site. You can just get the EXE file and replace the one that you have... no need to re-install

1) Copy/paste - I fixed up some of the copy and paste on the grid. [CTRL-C] will copy, [CTRL-V] will paste. I need to add a rt-click menu for that.
ALSO... you can copy multiple cells by selecting them first.

2) Sort - Click the top(grey) row of a column to sort by that column Up or Down

3) Duplicate Row Detection - Click on the Grid menu item and choose which column (or columns for Lat/Lon) the detection will go by. If a two rows
share the same value in the column, the grid will go to one of the rows and highlight it.

4) fixed the bug when the CSV file only has two values per line (Lat, Lon. for instance) it now reads it in and puts the right number

5) Other little fixes....

Thanx for the feedback, it's helping debug the code.

Mike

thanks for sharing

Inclusive the missing latitude data! Yes, I had only two data on same line, probably the reason.
Thanks and have a good day. wink

I fixed that so you can have 1-4 data points on a line. Should work ok now. YW, and you have a good one too smile

EDIT: Just updated the EXE to include Copy/Paste in the rt-click menu when you are pointing at the grid. Also confirms deleting rows and save before exit.

Will give it a try

Thanks for giving your time.
