Chit Chat Thread for the week of July 28th 2008
This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.
Have fun...
This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

This week we are recognizing Tailspin, Ktempesta, and Gofish
Tailspin, It is so nice to have you as a part of our family. You are always so helpful and knowledgeable about so many different things. This week you really helped out with your advice about "Text-to-Speech" programs.

Speed cameras and keeping maps updated
Does the speed camera function on a GPS work by latitude and longitude or by position on a highway?

Geographic POI
The old Roads and Recreation maps had some very interesting geographic POI such as distant hills, valleys or mountains. On long trips I found these interesting and I have been looking for something similar in POI to load onto my Nuvi. I have found waterfalls and national monuments and forests but nothing showing hills, bluffs etc. Can anyone point me to a POI listing for these features?

Where the H#$% is Matt?
This link is a little off topic, but it does involve some travel. I can't help but smile when I watch this video. Again and again... It would be cool to see the the track on his GPS, if he's got one.
check out his web site too. What a cool gig.

Low Clearance POI
Used Rt 414S towards Watkins Glenn last week my alert went off with the low clearance ahead. There is no bridge at that location. I tried to find the co ordinates in the file but did not. It went off right at the Watkins Glen KOA

Why is There NO Dedicated button for Work?
I don't know about other manufacturers, but Garmin only has a Home and a Favorite button. I certainly don't consider work my Favorite destination.

ArcGIS Explorer for POI Accuracy
If you are interested in POI accuracy and have a good technical or Geography background you might want to fool around with this free program. It allows you to download data directly from many cities and counties which is based on Cadastral surveys and would tend to be more accurate. It also allows importing of USGS and Census data ie TIGER Data. Create layers of coverage etc.

Why do you have a GPSr? What's your excuse?
I've read many posts that suggest that GPSr should have a Radar Detector. That has had me thinking. Always a dangerous activity.
Why do folks have a GPS?
Is the primary purpose to violate traffic laws without getting caught? If so can a police officer seize my GPSr as a criminal tool?

Where is the most complicated series of roads/exits/interchanges?
Stolen from the other thread,
"spaghetti junctions."
"rat's nest" of exits/ramps.
Linguini Junction.
I was reading another thread, and was wondering where the most insane set of roads are located.

Bad road, Bad Garmin or Bad driver?!?
While surfing another website, I came across this thread of someone following their Garmin directions.
The person writing did not state too clearly wether the driver was following a route to a destination or not.
I hope the link works.
