Anyone Had This Problem? (nuvi stopped working)

I was cruising down Hwy75 South, and my trusty 660 told me it had lost satellite reception. I was going about 65 mph and my little car just froze, and stopped in the of the road. It remained that way. After returning home I called Garmin Tech. Support, and they worked with it for about an hour. Still nothing. Finally the tech. told me I could send it in for repair, costing $250. It was put in service Oct '76. Seems as something not any older, and not misused or abused should last longer at their price. If anyone has had this problem and fixed it on their own please tell me how you did it. Otherwise, in the trashcan it goes, and I'll get something else.

surprised When I had similar problems, turning it off and then back on fixed it.. Obviously that did not work for you...

Oct.76??

You got a Garmin before the Sats were in the air..I am thinking it was 2006...I have a 660 and love it.. I got a 750 not sure if I am going to switch yet.. You can easily get a 760 for less than what they are asking for a repair..Sell the broken one on Ebay as a broken one..and get a 760...You might be able to hook it to the pc and back up your files. In fact if you did a Pc back up you might have a corrupt file on the 660 and you could try to just replace all the folders. If you are going to trash it send it to me I will try to copy all the software from my 660 to it..and see if we can make it live..

Not Uncommon

I've had a 2-year old, seldom used DVD player just quit working. My IBM laptop after several years started to simply power off on its own. My JVC TV one day, wouldn't power on any more.

Unfortunately, electronic devices just sometimes fail - even with the best of care. My TV and DVD player never moved.

Reset it

I had my brand new 750 lock up on me. Like aophiuchus said, I reset it and good to go. By the way, if the 660 is gone, you can get the 750 at Costco (online) for $199. Cheaper than getting the 660 fixed.

Before throwing it away, I'd open it up and check for things like unseated ribbon cables (especially to the fold-out aerial/antenna).

It would also be worth disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

660's Do That

Hey Robert,

My 660 does the same thing and I've read similar stories posted by other 660 owners. There seems to be an issue with the antenna (though I've never figured out exactly what).

My 660, like yours, will be working fine and for no apparent reason and with a full view of the sky, just loses satellites. It can be seconds or days before I can get it working again. Often it just decides to start navigating for the same apparent reason it stopped....none.

The cure, a remote antenna. I've never lost satellites (unless I'm in a tunnel of some sort) with the Gilsson antenna connected. If the 660 has lost satellites using the built in antenna and I plug in the remote it almost instantly finds them again.

Cheers wink

I'm sorry, the purchase was

I'm sorry, the purchase date was Oct. 2006. It was a typo error. It could be the antenna. Everything else works. Like I said, the tech worked for about an hour. We reset, and went into the pre-boot mode, and cleared all the settings, and reset several times. that didn't work either. I'll try working with the antenna, and let you know. Many thanks for the suggestions.

I'm glad you cleared that up Bob. I would've told you to put the original on a shelf (collectible) and go get yourself a new GPSr! wink

Has anyone seen a website that shows how a Nuvi is disassembled? I'm going to try to open it and take a look at the antenna connections. Who knows, I may even make a touch ipod out of it. laugh out loud laugh out loud razz

Probably antenna

Probably the flip-up antenna wore out. I had an old Garmin PDA with that kind of flip-up GPS antenna and it broke within 2 years. I could get it working with a Garmin external GPS receiver but it was not a pretty sight.

Jeff

don't trash it just yet!

Nuvi660 tracks/waypoint crash

Tracks and Way points crash the 660's OS, try erasing all waypoints and clear user data before sending it out to Garmin.

The Fix: Press and hold upper left corner screen during power-up. Select delete waypoints. Nuvi-660 will now boot up!

Take Apart

If you still need to take it apart and don't have the right Torx tool, this one from Home Depot is really good - (read the reviews):

It would also be worth disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

Another thought - there is a magnet in the flap that deactivates the GPS when you close it. It would be worth paying some attention to the sensor, in case it's 'stuck'. (If it's a Reed Switch, it could be - but it might be a Hall-effect sensor, in which case that wouldn't apply).

When you go into the 'Satellites Page', does it show any data from any of them at all?.

Well, I found someone in

Well, I found someone in Pittsburgh that appears to be reliable, and does repairs to Nuvies. I would include the website here if it is allowable. His flat rates are very reasonable (I think). Reasonable enough to not take a chance on trying to do it ones self. I do all kinds of clock repair, and feel confident to tackle this, but I sure don't want to break or crack the glass front. One thing would lead to another. Plus rounding up the right (2)tools.
