Summer gas prices

At least.

If the Wall Street gets any good news about the economy, I wouldn't be surprised to see $3.00-$3.50.

If a strong hurricane or two forms on top of the "good economic indicators," or if there's a lot of supply worries in the producing countries, I'd budget for $4, and hope that it won't happen.

Time for the night owls to be first for a change:)

We have game night every once in a while with friends and last night ran really late.

I came in 3rd in the game of life, not so good when only 4 people are playing.

I got to sleep in this morning.

Well that really brightens my Monday....

Every day is a day off!

With all the comments about today being a holiday I just realized being retired, I have six Saturdays and a Sunday to contend with each week.

I guess there must be some holidays mixed in there somewhere also.

Isn't that nice?

Where Are The Blu-Ray Bargains?

I already have a GPS of course, but the kids wanted to get me a Blu-Ray player for Xmas.

I wanted a player that meets the latest 2.0 BD-Live specifications. I decided on the Panasonic DMP-BS35K (preferred) which had the best reviews or the Sony BDP-S350.

They had some good Black Friday sales, mostly on older 1.0 and 1.1 spec units. I thought there would be after Xmas sales just as good.

The kids are in Canada and my wife was there and Future Shop had a fairly decent Boxing Day sale. However the kids did not have enough money and they wouldn't take my credit card over the phone.

Prices here in the US have remained very high since Xmas. The Panasonic which is supposed to have a street price of less than $250 has fluctuated between $350-$450 on Amazon.com. Today it is back close to $450. The Sony which is also supposed to have a street price under $250 has been about $270 on Amazon. Ebay prices aren't much better.

Since prices have been so high, I ended up buying a Playstation 3 on Ebay and saved $50. The PS3 also has the advantage of having Wi-Fi built in, something that none of the standalone players have yet, and I have no wired Internet connection downstairs where the set is. I also bought the Sony Blu-ray remote on Amazon for $20.

I am happy with my decision. Now I can play games on it too which I am starting to enjoy more and more, except they nickel and dime you to death with add-ons etc.

The retailers all claim sales are down and they are hurting so much. From what I've read Blu-ray player sales aren't exactly booming. Why are the Sony and Panasonic sites still out of stock of these players on their respective web sites? Retailers claim holiday sales were dismal, but yet the after Christmas sales weren't that good.

It's a mystery to me.

Water froze in our pipes

Water froze in our pipes over the weekend, but fortunately the pipes did not burst. Took us two days to figure out where the frozen portion was. Our 1913-era house has pipes that has the water main in the laundry room, then the cold water pipes go out east over a gangway (think: little corridor, but outside), only to swing back west to feed the kitchen (and the rest of the house). Don't rightly know why the (seemingly unnecessary) swing-out over the gangway -- except for greater risk of frozen pipes sad

Fortunately, the weather is warming up here in Chicago. I can't believe that I'm considering mid-teens to low 20s as "warm", but I guess after a couple of days of sub-zero temps (with wind chill in the -20F to -30F range), I'll take the 20s.

It's nice to have running water again and not in the broken pipes, sense.

Burst Pipes

I had the hot and the cold water pipes leading to my laundry room burst over the weekend. It was real fun cleaning up the mess and standing in freezing water while doing it.

re: Pipes

Regarding the people having trouble with pipes....our local water main burst not too far down the street. We were without water for over 24 hours.

I am so happy that as of yesterday afternoon we could finally wash up, flush the toilets, etc. I think it is almost worse being without indoor plumbing than being without electricity.

Of course it was below 0 when the main burst, spreading water like a lake all over the neighborhood. You can imagine what the streets are like!

It doesn't have to be cold

For water mains to burst, two have burst within a block of my home in the last 6 months and the coldest it gets here is the low 50's... The last one to burst was last week, temp in the mid 80's.... I attribute it to Mercury being in retrograde.... rolleyes

I've never even looked at Blu-Ray players until early December. What does 2.0 BD-Live specification mean and what does it do over the older 1.0 and 1.1 units?

Blu-Ray Specifications

Rayzers wrote:

Rayzers

Hey Rayzers, happy to answer your question.

Profile 1.0 was actually an interim specification while they were trying to put final specifications together. It doesn't really specify any mandates except for 64kb built in memory.

Profile 1.1 is called Bonus View. It allows a picture-in-picture capability used for filmmakers, directors, etc. to give commentary in another window while the film is playing.

Profile 2.0 is called BD-Live, is the newest to date and allows downloads of extra content, trailers, etc. from a high speed Internet connection..

For anyone buying a player today, I would recommend the newest spec to "future proof" their unit for at least awhile.

Some 1.1 profile units are upgradeable to BD-Live through firmware. Playstation 3 units have been constantly upgradeable to the newest specs.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray#Player_profiles for a list of the specs.
