Cell phone SIM card question

I realize that this forum has nothing to do with cell phones but I have noticed a lot of techies here so I'm hoping one of you can help me.

I have dropped my contract with a large national provider (sounds like AT&P) razz My girlfriend still has a contract with them but the display on her phone has gone black, she doesn't want to commit to another two year contract to get a new phone.

Can I pull the SIM card from her phone and put it in mine so she can use it as her phone with her number? From what I've read elsewhere this will work, I just want to make sure and hear it from people that I trust. I don't want to run the risk of toasting my phone (just in case) or her card.

If it makes a difference, My phone is a Samsung SGH-A437 and her's is an LG225 (or at least I think it's a 225)

Thanks in advance for your help!

So, you say you were with AT&T. Is her service with AT&T? If so, you can take her SIM and put it in your old phone. No problems switching the SIM's. If not, you can always get an unlocked phone off eBay which will also work, or go get your phone unlocked, like the previous post says (if your GF's service is not AT&T).

...actually

Just checked to make sure and she must have gotten her phone before they were aquired, it's a Cingular... Probably makes a difference. Worse case scenario I guess I should wait until the begining of the week and go to their store and ask them myself, just want to avoid the "We can do that for a fee" statement.

Thanks to you two for taking the time to try and help, we do appreciate it.

All ya'll are the greatest!

It doesnt matter if hers is

It doesnt matter if hers is cingular and yours was at&t. You can switch them. If it doesnt work you havent hurt anything but it should work just fine.

sim card

I've stuck a SIM card that came out of a Morotola Razr and put it in an old Nokia and it worked fine.

As far

as I know, switching sim cards would not "toast" your cell phones. Worst scenario that the phone won't recognize the wireless network. So, go ahead switching the sim cards, it might work that way.

If not, then the cell phone need to be unlocked. Another resource for above mentioned unlocking resources is to google!

call 6-1-1

Call 6-1-1 and tell them what you are doing. It will make registering the "new" phone on the network a lot faster and easier with her SIM. As both were GSM and provided by the same carrier, there will be no problems.

Thanks

Just want to say thank you to all of you that helped. Figured to be on the safe side we'd go to the local dealer and make sure all was well.

They said it was just a simple switch but still took both phones, swapped the cards and made sure that the phone was working correctly before sending us on our way. Kkind of a shocker in today's time when most places will charge you just for walking through their door!

Once again thanks for the help!
