Creating POI files

I can't seem to find the POI Files (GPX files) that I uploaded on the SD card in the "Extras" window on my Nuvi 660. Am I doing something wrong? Please advise.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I have an icon with a transparent background created in Photoshop. When the .psd file is loaded into PS, it shows and says the background is transparent. When I save it as .bmp, it loses it's transparency and the background becomes white. My icons show just fine on the Nuvi 350 screen, they just don't have a transparent background.

I'm trying to get the Applebee's BMP icon to show when I visit it but it won't show. I took the Applebees.csv and the Applebees.bmp and stuck them in a new folder. I renamed the Applebees.bmp to te same name as the .csv which is Applebees_us_V.csv. I loaded them into POI loader with no problem but it's justs not showing up. My red light cameras show up without any problems.

I'd love it even MORE if it were transparent. Yes, I know it's easy to do, but for some reason - I'm still a bmp-icon-transparency-making idiot.

Ok, to start with, I've been doing software dev for 30 yrs, so I understand these formats. And I write small personal conversion apps to play with conversions between the formats. My personal preference, due to portability, editability, etc, is GPX, but I've noticed some things while converting files and seeing how the Nuvi handles them.

I've been debating converting my csv POI (Naval Museums) to a GPX format. This will make it more portable as well as maintain the required line breaks.
(I want to include the naval vessel at each museum).

Am I correct in thinking that I will have to create the file as a cvs in excell and then use a converter to end up with a gpx file?

In excell I know what goes in column A & B, what additional info goes in the following columns and in what order so that the converter will produce a dialable gpx file?

OK, I got all my custom POI's (gpx format), custom alert sounds, and custom symbols all created and stored on the pc. I can transfer them to the Zumo via the POI loader and they work fine.
When I attempt to transfer them from the Zumo to mapsource, none show up. All that transfers are the waypoints displayed in favorites on the Zumo.

I'm headed to France in Feb. with my Nuvi 200 (Europe map in the SD slot) and have been trying to find some relevant POIs. Specifically I'm looking for tourist attractions in Paris, Normandy, and Nice. I understand POI Factory is focused on the U.S. and Canada but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good web site for European POIs. Thanks.

With 157 replies in the bmp discussion I am hoping someone can save me the time of reading through the whole thing to find the help I need. I tried copying a .gif from by credit union's website in hopes I could create a custom .bmp file out of it. So far my two attempts have failed. Is there a tutorial somewhere that will help me understand the pitfalls of creating my own .bmp files?

Does anyone know if a POI has been created for hotels that are pet friendly? My wife and I are getting ready to take a cross country trip with our dog and having a database of pet friendly hotels would be handy. I think this POI would have to be something of that's user-submitted since it would have different hotels and chains. Anybody else have any ideas?

I am brand new to using a GPS, and am attempting to modify my first POI file. I would like to use the rest area file for my state (WA) but would like to be able to set proximity alerts of 10 mi so as to better plan my trips. Is there a way to do this with a CSV file?

I searched this forum, but couldn't find an answer to:

a) I tried the online tool called http://www.poieditor.com/ that takes pointers from Google maps and creates/exports a CSV file with POI coordinates. But, it seems to truncate the numbers such that many coordinates in my town show-up as the same location.

Ok, i thought my Garmin Nuvi would synch up with address book. well yeah it does for calling, however why can't i get the addresses to show up as POI/s. I figure someone would know how to do this

Does anyone know a way to get Coordinates from a database that contains some addresses that are just cross streets For example "24th and Oregon Ave Philadelphia pa" The database contains quite a few entries like this and when I verified the addresses with websites it gave me the same address. The GPS visualizer returns 000000 for coordinates. Any ideas or sugestions?

Is there a way to find out if such a POI database exists somewhere?

I couldn't find it but I sure would like to get it downloaded as it would be a great help when walking around Barcelona, Spain to know where the next nearest subway station is.

Also I would like to know if there is a POI of tourist places in Barcelona to download.

I've tried out the red light camera POI's and so far, the warnings are well in advance, and they work great. A huge benefit to mobile GPS. Since they don't differentiate a specific direction of approach in a 'hot' intersection, the alert goes off from any direction. Considerably better than nothing!

I'm trying to figure out what source of coordinates comes closest to the coordinates displayed on my GPSr. First attempt was with lat/long coordinates from Google Earth.

Since we have a new Petro-Canada gas station POI file for the Canadians here (Thanks Putz17), would one of the resident Icon Artists do up a BMP for the chain, please?

Suitable for Garmin Nuvi, please.
