Converting from CSV to GPX

I've been debating converting my csv POI (Naval Museums) to a GPX format. This will make it more portable as well as maintain the required line breaks.
(I want to include the naval vessel at each museum).

I've done a bit of searching on the GPX standard, and I don't think it's too hard, but I don't think I need all the necessary extensions. I was wondering if anyone had done this, had suggestions (and/or tools, although I may script my own thing in Perl for my linux box), and in general ideas for when I finally get off my butt and convert things.

Thanks!

Excel VBA script available

John Brannigan on 4/6/2007 created an Excel VBA script which converts a CSV file to a GPX file. I've used it and it works nicely.

I have also extended it to allow me to extract all waypoints from the csv file that fit within a geographic box defined by the lat/long of opposite corners.

If you can't find John, let me know if you want the script and I'll be glad to share.

Ack... I'm playing with it

Ack... I'm playing with it some.
The problem is that my csv defies some standard conventions.

The main piece is easy (name, address, phone)
The tough part is because this is for naval museums, I list the ships. So how do I deal with USS Los Angeles (SSN-688)?

I think I'm sort of going to have to do this manually. I found gpsvisualizer and some other stuff, but my csv is too unique. Plus, I actually make it more complicated by doing it on my linux box rather than use excel for my csv.

I'll let you folks know what I come up with.

GPX to POI

What I did was use GeePeeExx

What I did was use GeePeeExx to do one waypoint, and then modelled the rest off that.

Unfortunately, it didn't ultimately do what I was hoping for. GPX was allowing 2 address lines, and phone stuff, but no really good way to have a printed set of comments (i.e. the USS Olympia CL-7 or whatever).

I think after all the time I think I'll keep it csv.

But wouldn't you want to put all the extra stuff in the 'description' field, for output on Page 2, rather than in the address fields?

I agree. This is a great program and I have not seen any limitations within it so far. Thanks Phil!

I did put the stuff in the

I did put the stuff in the description field.
Which, for my test run, did not display anything.
Nor was there a page down or anything like that.

Probably will play with it some later. Thing that aggravates me is that I had the whole thing converted to the right format, with some squirrelly error somewhere causing it not to download. Then I accidentally whacked the file.

Save from one POI format to another

Give poiEdit a try!
This program converts from many different gps formats to others.
This is what I use!
