Nuvi 660 SD Card - I've uploaded GPX files onto my SD Card but I don't see them

I can't seem to find the POI Files (GPX files) that I uploaded on the SD card in the "Extras" window on my Nuvi 660. Am I doing something wrong? Please advise.

Thanks,

sd card

rmunoz240,
Hey I had the same problem first time I installed poi's to my SD.
First off - did you use POI Loader from garmen to do so?
You cannot just copy them to SD or GPS from pc.
MUST LOAD WITH POI Loader.
In POI loader, you must be sure to select SD drive or GPS drive as target. (both will read as regular drives)
Them copy files as wanted.
Disconnect from pc and power up GPS.
It may prompt you at boot up that it found some poi file on SD and do you want to copy these to GPS.
It's your choice here.
Then go to extras, custom pois. Touch this name, and unit should continue to your new pois.
Hope this helps.

Did you load them with POI Loader?

When you go to Where to? > down arrow > Extras > Custom POIs do they not show up?

Mhlagarce, Thank you for the

Mhlagarce,

Thank you for the speedy response.

I will trying reloading the files again as you mentioned. I must have done something wrong because I
do see the files in the SD card when I plug the GPS to my computer, however I do not see the new POI's when I go to "Extras", "Custom POI's".

Thank you for your help.

Nuvi 660 SD Card

Motorcycle Mama

Thank you for your prompt response.
I believe I did load the files through POI Loader for Windows. And yes, when I follow the path on my GPS:
"Where to?" > down arrow > "Extras" > "Custom POIs" they do NOT show up. Are they not suppose to show up? Please advise.

Thanks!

Yes, they should show up when you touch "Custom POIs" on the menu screen on your 660.

So, let's backtrack.

What files are you loading? Did you create them? Did they come from POI Factory? Did they come from somewhere else? We need to verify that they are, in fact, valid Custom POI files.

If they are valid, did you create a folder on your computer for all your Custom POI files?

Then when you ran POI Loader, presumably you selected your SD card as the destination (which is fine).

And then did you navigate to the folder on your computer where the Custom POI files are located as the source of the data?

And did POI Loader give you a Finish screen indicating that xxxx number of POI locations were successfully loaded?

If the files are successfully loaded, you will see them when you touch Custom POIs on your menu. Also, a file named POI.GPI will be created on your unit (or the SD card) which will contain all the data.

POI Loaded but...

Hi, I was reading this forum and I think I have the same problem although I do see my POI, I am only able to load one at a time. Why? I uploaded CVS pharmacy and it showed up ok, then I loaded Wallgreens with a bitmap and they show up but where did my CVS file go? I am confused can't seem to find an answer anyone please help!!! I downloaded the files from POI Factory as well as the bitmap. Please if you know how to get more than 1 POI folders, let me know, thank you.

Here are the steps ...

... to load more than one POI file. Sorry if I restate the known/obvious:

1) make sure all your custom POI files (csv OR gpx) are in the same location/folder. Also, any associated sound files (mp3) or icons (bmp) need to be in the same folder, and the same name as the POI
2) Start up POI Loader
3) At the "Welcome To POI Loader ..." hit "next"
4) On the "Select Device" screen, your nuvi should pop up under the "Find Device" button, and next to the "Device:" text. Click the location you want to load the POIs to. (I have a choice, because I have an SD card installed, the Nuvi comes up as default, but the SD card is selectable as well). Click "next"
5) Select "Install new custom POI's onto your device". Click "next"
6) "Please Select the directory" where you custom POI's are stored. Point to the folder you used in step (1). Also, until you are more familar with the POI process, use the "Express/Recommended" option. Click "next"

At this point, your POIs will be loaded to your Nuvi (or SD card). A message will appear about the total number of POIs loaded.

POI.gpi Is overwritten each time

Every time you run POI Loader, it overwrites the old POI.gpi. So you can rename the POI.gpi to indicate a category before loading another category. Or, if you prefer a single large POI.gpi file, you can either put ALL POI files in one folder, or create category subfolders (one level deep) and point to the parent to load them all at once.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

My Nuvi 660 will SOMETIMES

My Nuvi 660 will SOMETIMES NOT SEE the SD card so, I have to pull it out and then reinsert it making such it's locked in all the way at which point the unit will see the card and give me the NEW POI FILES FOUND message. You might want to try removing the card and reinstalling it.

What a sweet thing to say. Thank you, tiffany.

Folders ....

Here's how I do it.

Create a Main POI folder on your computer for your POI files. You can have subfolders under your main folder, if you want. The folders will create categories. You can't have more than one level of subfolder. The files themselves will create the subcategory.

For example, it might look like this.

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.

In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.

Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.

This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.

This is how the first level shows up on my GPS unit.

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.

Then if I select National Monuments, I get this.

Thank you but POI are offset

Hi, I got your instructions and it helped a lot!!! Now I tried so many POI from this site and others, have them in categories many POI are offset by about 500-1000ft. I know this because when I go to the map on the unit it shows that I arrived but in fact the store is probably 3 blocks away. Why is this I have the latest maps on my Garmin 780. I then tried the Customs POI and it was a little closer but also offset, this is not that good because I also installed alerts and when I am approaching a store it tells me the store is near by but in reality is about 4 blocks away. I do have the alert to tell me when I am 10 feet away but I also press on the map to see where the exact location is and nope is not where the actual store is, are the POI on my units offset, if someone is having this problem please let me know. I did notice (after so much research) that the when the unit has a POI with intersection points it leaves you about 3 blocks away but when it has a full address it actually takes you exactly where the store is located, try it on your device and let me know if you have the same issue thank you.

.

Which files are you using?

And be aware that a setting of 10 feet for your alert likely won't work or at least won't work well because the GPS unit isn't that accurate.

Even the best is good for only 3m

True - even the best GPSr is accurate to only 3m (9 feet). I geocache with an eTrex, and am very happy with an accuracy within 5-7m.

But the fact that his Nuvi is off by three blocks is troubling. I have never been that far off. I would suggest trying to set WAAS on and see if it gets better. If not, maybe a call to Garmin support is in order.
