Creating POI files

So far I have not found the info I'm looking for.

How to start a new POI file with my info loaded into it.

There is very little I can't do in DB's or Excel but I need a starting point. My online searches have lead me to all of you. I'm sure i have missed something but I do not have the knowledge at this point to really know what that is.

Just a quick question?
I noticed that the alert distances for the red light cameras and speed radar cameras is 1319ft. Is there a specific reason this figure was chosen?

i have tried to download this poi file but it gives me a error that no data will be downloaded after line 1141 in the file how do i fix this. it downloads a partial part of the file but nothing after that line?

Hey there, new user here. When I try to down load a poi (rest areas) it wants to open in excel which I don't have. I am using a mac. Any help out there?

Anyone know of a list of characters that aren't allowed in the name or description fields in a csv or gpx file? I ran into a problem with the poi loader today when trying to import a gpx file that had a ' (single quote) in the description field. After some testing figured out the garmin's poi loader didn't like it.

I thought I'd seen an earlier thread that listed the maximum number of characters that can appear in the "Name" and "Description" fields of csv files intended for use on Garmin GPS navigators. (That is, the 3rd and 4th columns in a 4-column csv file.) I've searched all over, but now cannot find it.

Is it just me, or is the latest Auto Zone file, (AutoZone Auto Parts IL, IN, MI, OH, and WI Locations, not in csv format? It says csv in the download screen, but when I open it in my editor, it is garbage. Could it be gpx?

I have been using Google Earth to create POI files. I'm trying to create a file for veterinarians, because Garmin Nuvis don't have a POI category for veterinarians. I am trying to create separate files for each state, then I will combine them when I have all of the state files created. I have performed a business search for Veterinarians for the first two states.

I recently took the plunge and purchased an in-dash Nav system. Got (I think!) a great deal on the Pioneer AVIC-D3. Wanted an indash for reasons not important here. New to car Nav systems but using handhelds for years.

I apologize in advance if this was covered elsewhere in these forums, but I was not able to find the answer....so here's my question:

I fail to understand why my proximity alarms are not working with my custom POI. I created two directories, ("Canadian Traffic Alerts" - containing "Redlight.GPX" + "Redlight.BMP") and I get proximity alarms, my other directory ("Friends" - containing "Friends.GPX" + "Friends.BMP") proximity alarms don't work.

Why would anyone go through the trouble of creating a data base for all of the Olive Gardens? I just read a post about someone starting a POI file for Olive Garden Resturants. I'm sorry, I must be missing something. If I want to find an Olive Garden, on my Garmin 2820, I press the "Find" button then

First, here's how I manage my POI's...

1. Go to maps.google.com, and use the MyMaps feature to create a named map.
2. Add as many Placemarks as needed, including pertinent information for each.
3. After adding all Placemarks, right-click on the "View in Google Earth" link at the top of the map, and then click "Copy Shortcut" (assuming IE)

Does anyone have an icon that would be good for the paintball locations file?

TMK has updated his LL Bean file (Thanks, TMK) but there is no icon for the chain available here.

Would one of the resident artists do up an icon, please?

I can't seem to find the POI Files (GPX files) that I uploaded on the SD card in the "Extras" window on my Nuvi 660. Am I doing something wrong? Please advise.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I have an icon with a transparent background created in Photoshop. When the .psd file is loaded into PS, it shows and says the background is transparent. When I save it as .bmp, it loses it's transparency and the background becomes white. My icons show just fine on the Nuvi 350 screen, they just don't have a transparent background.
