Can someone make this bmp transparent?

I love this In-N-Out bmp http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4139

I'd love it even MORE if it were transparent. Yes, I know it's easy to do, but for some reason - I'm still a bmp-icon-transparency-making idiot.

Can you help?

Transparent Bitmap?

I don't think the .bmp format supports transparency. The only file formats I know of that do are .gif and .png.

.

You are confusing two different things.

For a transparent background, set the background as the 255,0,255 color.

For transparency save in 256 color. 16 or 32bit work as well, 24 doesn't. 256 would be best.

This works for bmp files loaded as Custom Icons with POI Loader.

Here's one.

This is the icon.

This is what it looks like on my Zumo.

Transparent backgrounds for use on webpages and other things are gifs and png files and use a transparent layer.

POI Loader supports transparency in the form of magenta in BMP files for icons. The color shows magenta on a computer but when loaded to the GPS unit it is transparent.

You'll notice that the edges still show a little bit of the magenta on my GPS unit because I was too lazy to go in there close and clean it up.

new background

I'll make it for you ... this icon is too small of a file at this point to convert the background. I will find a higher res In-n-Out logo and make a new one for you.

BTW ... the transparent backgrounds for the Garmin icons are made by setting the background to Magenta (255,0,255), not truly transparent as in NO background like in a PhotoShop file.

THANK YOU

Sweet! I've tried to make transparent files using MS Paint, but it never works! I don't have Photoshop.

Thank you in advance!

Check out the free/opensource GIMP editor:
http://www.gimp.org/windows/

The interface isn't up to PhotoShop standards (yet, although the GIMPshop plugin is closer), but it's free instead of $999.

/me likes it.

Yes, a very good P-Shop alternative (not yet a replacement).

Wow, fantastic!

djs - you rock. THANK YOU!

Please restate what you are trying to do

What exactly are you trying to do? As Motorcycle Mama stated, you can make an icon have a non-square boarder by coloring in all of the border that you wish to vanish with the magenta color. Be sure that the bmp is saved in 256 color mode. But you could also make an icon that looked transparent by making every other pixel transparent(magenta) in a checker board pattern. You don't have many bits to work with in an icon and I wouldn't really recommend this for a complex looking icon, but for a simple icon that could be recognized easily even with half of it being transparent, this might give you a nice and unique effect.

jbauer, It works with Paint

In Paint, select Colors>edit colors>define custom colors>change red to 255, green to 0, and blue to 255>OK. Then fill area with this transparent color.

If you have trouble filling small image, try View>Zoom>Large Size.

It's been awhile since I did this - let us know if this works for you.

I have nothing to contribute

I have nothing to contribute but wanted to complement the above posters for a very interesting exercise.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip/info! I just learned something about "transparent" backgrounds.
