Having a hard time getting BMP to show

I'm trying to get the Applebee's BMP icon to show when I visit it but it won't show. I took the Applebees.csv and the Applebees.bmp and stuck them in a new folder. I renamed the Applebees.bmp to te same name as the .csv which is Applebees_us_V.csv. I loaded them into POI loader with no problem but it's justs not showing up. My red light cameras show up without any problems.

try

I am new to this but I would try:

1) Zooming in closer to see if that works.
2) Renaming both to something simpler like just Applebees. You can put the .csv and .bmp after them, but I don't need to do that on my XP computer running Firefox. Then reload into the GPS.

Having a hard time getting BMP to show

The POI folder will only go two folders deep. In other words....Main folder named POI, sub folder named Applebees. If you put the new folder in the Applebees folder, the unit will not read from that folder. This information came from another post I read here. I have not tested this but have all of my folders set this way without any problems. Hope this helps.

Tried what was suggested but

Tried what was suggested but still nothing. I keep going over the FAQ also and following and still get nothing.

.

Double and triple check that you don't have double file extensions on the file names (ie Applebees.bmp.bmp) which will cause them to not work.

If the file extensions are hidden on your computer, change the setting in your file browser so that they aren't hidden.

Double check the spelling and for extra spaces or underlines.

Be sure that you are looking on the map for the icons and not in the menu list.

Zoom all the way in on the map to see if they show up.

Be sure you are trying in the 2D map mode and not in the 3D map mode.

Hidden file extensions

If the file extensions are hidden on your computer, change the setting in your file browser so that they aren't hidden.

To change the settings on your pc, open any folder, click on the top of your screen, tools, folder option, in the new window click the View tab. Take out the checkmark from “hide extensions for known file type”. That’s it.

well I found the problem.

well I found the problem. The POI here doesn't have none of the Applebee's in my near by location which is Toledo, Ohio. The POI said Applebee's for the whole U.S. I quess Toledo, Ohio isn't part of the U.S smile

Well I did try out Walmart and at least that one works so Im doing it right.

Map mode and zoom level?

On my Nuvi 350, POI's will only show in Track Up and North Up modes, and only when zoomed in to 200 ft or less. They will not show in 3D view unless there is a proximity or speed alert on them. I'm pretty sure when there is an alert, they will show up at smaller zoom levels in all modes.

If you find locations in your area that are not in the file please send the information to the author of the file so that they can be added. If you get a bounce back on the contact link, send them to me and I will add them.

After I load POI files, I like to go to the Custom POI menu, select one, and Browse Map to make sure it's where I think it should be, and that the icon is showing up as I expected. I've gone through a few cycles of that while trying to refine custom icons that I've created.

Icons Won't Show In 3D?

Hi, I just started putting icons in my garmin c530 and they all load good and I see them when I check the map out before actually driving to the location. So when I get to the location I don't see the icon I installed, just the checkered flag. As mentioned above the 2 files that I have (Advance Auto PArts and Autozone) which do have alerts do show on the map upon arrival to that destination. So in conclusion am I to understand that the only way for me to see all my other icons that do not have alerts is to use the c530 in 2D mode?

Yep. Many models don't show the Custom POI icons in 3D mode.

c580 shows icons in 3D

I don't know how different the c580 is, but it shows the POI icons in 3D mode as long as I'm in one of the 4 closest zoom levels. I got tired of 3D mode, though, as it doesn't show the road ahead as well as 2D track up mode.

maybe that's why I never see

maybe that's why I never see my icons. I'm gonna try the North Up view for awhile and see what happens...

Thx.

So, did it work?

I just read this thread and am rather disappointed that what would seam obvious to have custom POIs show on the 3D display does not happen.

I've just started playing with custom POIs and would never see them either. I set warnings, and would not get notifications.

I just tried simulating a drive and it appears to work, with either 2D map options. I'm anxious to see how it works on the way home this evening.

Different models work differently. Some models (for instance the Zumo) do show the Custom POI icons in the 3D mode. And different models display the icons at different zoom levels.

Check out this faq page for some great information about setting alerts.

Applebees

I too loaded the applebees.csv file and found that NJ and PA were missing so I had to create my own.

Corrections and additions

If you find locations that are missing or that are incorrect you should send the information to the author of the file so that they can be added.

If you can't contact the author, you could sent the info to Miss POI. I am sure that Miss POI could find a way to get them added/corrected.

I know that we would all appreciate getting up-to-date files.

another person needing help

i just got a nuvi 360 and I have some custom poi files that i downloaded from here with custom bmp's to go along with it and they wont show up
while driving? (they are 100% named correctly)

do you have set speed or proximity alerts? does in just not work in 3D mode? do you have to use .gpx files instead of .csv (seems when i map gpx files they show up at 0.5mi vs 200ft with csv files)? do you have to have poi files in your favorites to have the icons show up while driving?

thanks for any help you can give.

They won't show up when just driving down the street, unless you have them set as proximity points. You will only see the icon when you select a POI and view it on the map, or when you are navigating to it.

.

You need to be zoomed in to 200 (or maybe 300) feet or closer in a 2D map mode for the icons to show on the map.

thanks

what is a good rule of thumb proximity distance?

And does anyone know if you can have the map zoomed out further to view gpx files?

Here's how it works on the C550

I've not heard of or seen a difference in viewing bmps (custom icons) using csv or gpx poi files. I've used both with bmps and there is no difference.

Proximity and or alerts do not need to be used to view a bmp while just driving, nor does a location need to be selected (go to).

They WILL most definitely show up while driving, with no particular route or favorite or custom poi location selected via "Go to"

They do have to be identical in name to the csv / gpx and no double "image_name.bmp.bmp" extensions. This is a common error.
They (the bmp file) must also be in the same folder with the csv/gpx file when loading via poi loader.

The other thing as pointed out in this thread is the zoom level. Some units vary as far as how close or far the zoom level is and viewing the custom bmp.

On my C550 my custom bmp's display in 3D and 2D and at zoom levels of 300, 200, 120, 80 ft. At 500ft they go away.

I use my 550 every day to and from work and no route selected - not navigating to any particular place - just turned on. My redlight camera locations alert me with a custom sound and the custom redlight icon appears. All of the starbuck locations that I travel close enough to, also display the starbuck bmp.

I thought the 3xx and 6xx series worked similarly, I'm not certain about the 2xx's.

One other thought, there have been instances when updates buggered up the bmp display capabilities. This happened to the 5xx series in the past...that is always a possibility. If it's just your unit....recheck the files and reload via poi loader.

It may help if you state which files/bmp's you're having trouble with. Others can try to duplicate your problem.

........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

yeah

i was testing it on my Nuvi 360 this past weekend and it seems i can only view the bmp files while driving in 2D and not 3D. Kind of a bummer.

I will try just turning it on and not have the garmin direct me to a particular location and see if the bmp icons show up. good tip.

I still want to try and set up proximity alerts.

Thanks
