Getting Coordinates for address that only contain cross streets

Does anyone know a way to get Coordinates from a database that contains some addresses that are just cross streets For example "24th and Oregon Ave Philadelphia pa" The database contains quite a few entries like this and when I verified the addresses with websites it gave me the same address. The GPS visualizer returns 000000 for coordinates. Any ideas or sugestions?

Manually

MapSource or some other mapping program you can place a Waypoint at that intersection, you can then see the coordinates,it will be close but not as good as an actual address.

Address not quite right?

It's probably because the address isn't quite right and the Geocoding service (Yahoo! ?) returns a few choices. It's not obvious how to tackle a condition like that, in a Batch geocoder.

Specifying something closer to the actual address, returns a single result, (with a precision of "Address")

S 24th and Oregon Ave
Philadelphia

returns:

Lat: 39.91975
Lon: -75.188259
S 24th St & W Oregon Ave
Philadelphia
PA
19145
US

Good Idea but.......

That would work however I have no idea what the actual address really is. Even if i knew the actual address it would take too long to change all the entries that only had cross streets.

Coordinates for cross streets

Google Earth will understand the request. The coordinates for that particular intersection are Long. -75.1884 Lat. 39.9197 and described as "Oregon Ave & S 24th St, Philadelphia, PA 19145."

If there were a free batch converter out there that used either the Google Maps API or Microsoft Mappoint Services we'd be in business. Both provide nearly "rooftop" accuracy. So far, I haven't been able to find one. Wish I could.

The only free API out there that is relatively accurate is yahoo's geocoder which is used by batchgeocode.com and gpsvisualizer.com. If you try that address at maps.yahoo.com, it will give you an error window that says it couldn't find the address but made a placemark at the closest matching location. In this case it did place the mark at the same intersection. It, of course, doesn't display the coordinates. Microsoft Live maps are the same except the placement is more accurate.

I tried something else for you that appears to work. It should work on large files as well. It also uses the Yahoo Map API. I popped your address sample along with the Zip code into it and geocoded. The results? LAT 39.917668 LONG -75.176381.
The following is without the zip code.
LAT 39.91272 LONG-75.139464

You can plainly see that there are differences...

Google Earth 39.9197 -75.1884
Excel Geocoding tool with zip 39.917668 -75.176381
Excel Geocoding tool w/o zip 39.91272 -75.139464

All are ballpark with Google Earth's being the most accurate, the Excel geocoding tool with zip next most accurate, and without the zip least accurate.

The magic Application? www.juiceanalytics.com/writing/2006/04/excel-geocoding-tool-...

It's a free Excel Spreadsheet that geocodes. It will also create a kml file to view the locations in Google Earth when finished Geocoding. I have to say that the .klm is a pretty lame though. It only creates pushpins at the locations with no location description. You need a yahoo ID (e-mail address)to use it. Easily gotten if you don't have one.

For what it sounds like you're doing, I think you'll love the spreadsheet tool mentioned above.

If you have to manipulate Excel Spreadsheets a lot you should also try ASAP Utilities for Excel. It's free for home use and $49 for business use. It can be found at http://www.asap-utilities.com/ . Invaluable for making POI's quickly from large lists!

Hope this helps.
