Having trouble with icon transparency

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I have an icon with a transparent background created in Photoshop. When the .psd file is loaded into PS, it shows and says the background is transparent. When I save it as .bmp, it loses it's transparency and the background becomes white. My icons show just fine on the Nuvi 350 screen, they just don't have a transparent background. What step am I missing?

Transparent

Transparency can only be done with gif files and not with jpg or bmp

.

For a transparent background, set the background as the 255,0,255 color.

For transparency save in 256 color. 16 or 32bit work as well, 24 doesn't. 256 would be best.

This works for bmp files loaded as Custom Icons with POI Loader.

Show me one

Motorcycle Mama can you show me an bmp icon that has a transparent background? transparent background can only be created as gif or png files.

Yeah, I tend to agree that

Yeah, I tend to agree that anything transparent can be only saved as gif or png.

Here's one.

This is the icon.

This is what it looks like on my Zumo.

You are confusing two different things.

Transparent backgrounds for use on webpages and other things are gifs and png files and use a transparent layer.

POI Loader supports transparency in the form of magenta in BMP files for icons. The color shows magenta on a computer but when loaded to the GPS unit it is transparent.

You'll notice that the edges still show a little bit of the magenta on my GPS unit because I was too lazy to go in there close and clean it up.

transparent background

the background will not appear transparent in your file ... it will appear Magenta (255,0,255 ... Red, Green, Blue).

your Garmin will recognize this Magenta and make it transparent.

I know ... don't ask me - I don't know why it works this way, but it does. I have made and posted dozens of icons and this is the only way to do it.

stand corrected

That was a new one on me, so the way to fool the GPSr is to set background to magenta and not to transparency when creating the icon.
Apologies are in order, learn something new every day.
