new week / new active members

TMK and GlennCahn earned active member icons this week and join others who have been making great contributions to the site. Several more of you are on track to become active members next week.

To be an active member, all you need to do is have made posts in at least 3 of the last 5 weeks (Mon-Sun GMT).

Active members may download red light cameras for free. Eventually we'll add some other perks for people who live in areas without cameras smile

holiday lights going up

Jon and I are venturing out into the cold to put up christmas lights this afternoon. Jon says that he will be back to work on programing later today.

Thanksgiving was nice

It was pretty quiet around the site yesterday. I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving holiday.

After looking over ads in the newspaper, I decided to stay home and avoid the shopping crowds today. I will continue working on adding image capability and merging the POI file lists.

Miss POI has some new red light cams that I'll post later today. I also notice some new user uploads / updates on the home page. Things get a little better each week!

Sticky Mess

Hey guys, I found this and had to post it.
Call it Miss Poi’s giggle of the week.

DUMB QUESTIONS ??

Thats twice now that I have been afraid to post a question, because I thought it was obviouse or stupid,(Using GOOGLE Earth & Smaller Fonts) and It has sparked some really good information sharing.
I am impressed.
I guess their really is no dumb question here.
(Except maybe the Scuba/Sky diving with GPS line a few of us had going) (LOL)

Black Friday GPS deals

I for one plan to brave the crowds for some early morning shopping on Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving...

JM and I wanted to wish everyone a happy thanksgiving. We plan to stay close to home for the holiday, so you can expect we'll be active on the site.

For those of you taking a trip with a new gps: good luck, and please let us know how it goes.

download counters

Uploaded files now have a simple download counter. Counts include any downloads that happened after about 5:15 PM Eastern today (11/20/2006).

You can see the download counter for any file that was uploaded with your user account. The counter is located on the download page, right below the file name.

If you use the Edit page to upload a newer file, counts are carried forward from your previous file(s).

plans for week 11/20

This week, I'll be working on download counters and blending the new upload pages with the older free POI files. Running out of room on the front page is a nice problem to have. smile

mounting solution

Just found this on another site: "I have a Garmin NUVI 350 and learned early on not to mount it by sticking it to the windshield. I found a very useful and acceptable solution was to place the mounting base in an open ashtray on my dashboard. Just open the ashtray, place the mounting base in it then close it to make it a snug fit. Reverse the precedure to remove the unit. No muss, no fuss." Mounting any of my units has been a porblem.

Uploads

Miss POI What is it that your looking for regarding Uploads. I've run across some great Poi's photo cameras and speed traps in New york and elsewhere in the USA. But I don't know If I can post them without the permission of the author who made them and I don't know how to get that permission. I can make POI,s say in Virginia or New York and the NorthEast where I,am from. Anything in particular?

Creating POI's

I would appreciate any information on how people create large POI data files like all "Starbucks" including their locations and phone numbers. Where is this data derived from?

thanks

Gary

User Icons

Well, I stayed up a few extra hours last night and got the basic framework in place for user icons.

Some accounts now have a "poi contributor" icon below the name. It will show for anyone who submits a POI file or location data.

I'm also working on an "active member" icon that will show if you are regularly participating in the discussion forums. It will be ready later this week.

User icons (aka "Badges") are kind of fun, and they provide another way to recognize your contributions to the POI Factory community.
