maintaining active status

after achieving active status, what needs to be done to maintain it?

Headstone locations

I want to use the GPS to put coordinates for the location of my ancestors headstone. Some are in very bad shape and are hard to locate.

Has anyone ever done anything like this or have advise how to proceed?

Contributors of the Week 2011-09-26

This week we're recognizing turboccc. He's already well decorated as contributor of the year for 2009 and 2010, but like the energizer bunny, this guy just keeps going-and-going-and-going smile

This last week, turboccc's been quite busy making the top-notch Extra POI Editor (EPE) even more "awesomer", with new beta versions 5.26, 5.27 and soon EPE v5.28.

Deleteing POI files

I recently downloaded two files to my brand new Garmin GPS, Costco and Walmart locations. However now I know that I already have very accurate information for both so how do I delete these from my GPS?

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive.

Thank you CherylMASS for starting the original "Keeping the Windmill Alive" thread at POI Factory.

we are not the only ones using Google Maps

CHICAGO (KGO) -- Burglars are now using Google Maps to search for victims.

Police in the Chicago area recently arrested two suspects in a string of burglaries involving Google Maps.

Investigators believed they used the Google service to find expensive homes along highways. The burglars then allegedly use Google Earth to see the homes in 360-degree detail.

PA is out of sight

We are going to leave for Gettysburg Sunday and I was checking on tolls to make sure I have enough in my IPass account to cover all of the tolls. I can't believe Pennsylvania, it's going to cost almost as much to go part way across PA as it will to cross Indiana and Ohio combined.

GPS on Gasbuddy

Gasbuddy.com and its sister websites post a poll each week. This weeks poll asks what kind of GPS do users have in their primary vehicle.

Current voting shows 41% use portable PNDs, 32% don't use a gps at all, 13% use their cells and only 7% use in dash units.

Voting ends Sunday

POI Factory Outages 9/26/2011

POI Factory was offline for a while today due to a network outage at our hosting company. The outage started around 9 am eastern and lasted approximately two hours.

EDIT: A second outage started around 1:45 pm eastern and lasted approximately 1.75 hours.

Sorry for the troubles.

Improving GPS Accuracy When Recording Locations

I have tended to take three coordinate readings for locations being recorded in a POI file and averaging the results. Any thoughts on whether that is a worthwhile approach?

Another thought, you can drop a latitude/longitude marker in Google maps. But I have often wondered how accurate the GPS coordinates are in Google maps. So far I have not observed any discernible discrepancy.
