Want to see a highway map of the US displayed as a Tube or Subway map?
Alternative Tube Maps: US Highways and Interstates

That is a different way to look at a map.
I doubt I would ever use such a map to travel anywhere
I'll bet you do use a similar map, but not for road travel. If you've ever ridden public transportation you've used a similar map to see the route taken and which stops are along the route.
This particular map in the link is actually pretty useful. It gives you the highway number, it's origin and destination and several major points along the way. If you wanted to travel on one of these highways, you would know where to pick it up and some major cities enroute.
The few times I've ridden the subway in NYC I guess it was a map something similar. On the subway though there is nothing in between the stations but walls to display on a map.
I wouldn't use it while traveling on surface roads though. I want to know what's around me and my direction, N S E & W as well as the other roads. I always use 2D Track Up with the Map Detail set to High. On the highway I have the zoom set to 0.3 which gives me as much zoom as I can get while still showing me all of the side roads.
3D to me is just as bad as these tube maps. I don't comprehend anything about where I am and where I'm going. All I see is a distorted picture of what's right in front of me. I don't see using 3D to look ahead (zoom out), even a little bit, without the screen being one big cluttered mess. Like I said, it's just my preference. I'm always looking ahead.
I understand that limitation as well. It would be handier for trip planning rather than navigation. It answers a question of which highway goes there.
