Need info on map updates
I also posted this in tomtom forum. Figured I might more answers on here also. I am getting ready to update my map.Does it also update new commercial construction or just new roads? I have a target and bestbuy that they are building next to me. Was wondering if it would update to any other businesses that are new.

DIY GPS!
If you've ever wondered what goes on inside a GPS receiver, here's a superb writeup by a guy who built his own:
http://www.holmea.demon.co.uk/GPS/Main.htm
It doesn't matter if you know the difference between a Costas loop and a bang-bang discriminator; it's well written and will give you a good idea of what's going on.
Enjoy!

too many GPS
Hi everyone, Happy thanksgiving. I have a question. There are so many GPS models even in the same company. How do you pick one? I have seen them priced from 54 dollars to over 300 dollars, I understand that, but even in the mid price range, there are so many to chose from. Thanks

He visited six other locations while in Vancouver and will be shown on future episodes.

Inmternal Traffic Receiver
Hello,
Does anyone know of a current GPS unit that has an internal traffic receiver?
All that I have seen lately have an FM receiver in the charger cable. To get traffic with this type of unit, you must be plugged in to a power source. I'm looking for a GPS with traffic that can be used for traffic reports even when on battery. Anyone know of a unit like this?

Contributors of the Week 2011-11-14
This week we are recognizing glwilbert (aka Microchip). He’s been very helpful with red light camera reports all around the Dallas – Ft. Worth area, where he drives a big rig truck. He also maintains the “Weigh Stations – USA” POI file and appears from time-to-time in the discussion forums.
Thank you glwilbert!

don't keep valuables in the car
This is a very interesting article: http://www.azcentral.com/community/phoenix/articles/2011/11/...
Basically a gang of people walking through neighborhoods looking for open cars, stealing anything of value.
Many people take their vehicle security for granted, and are lazy to ensure all valuables are out of the car every day.

Settings for In - Flight Use
I just got back from a DC to LA round trip, and used my 3490 for every mile above 10,000 feet.
This is approved by United. And I used it in plain view of the crew. Sat in 8A on a 757 - a very visible position. No one cared at all.
Some settings I used, that may help:
- I set the navigation to 'off-road'
- I use the Garmin Garage 'Jet' icon
- Driving Map View 'North Up'

Recording GPS Voices
I debated whether or not this should go in the Jokes Thread, or in the TomTom forum, and decided to split the difference
There is an entertaining video that purports to be the recording session for Bert and Ernie's TomTom GPS voices. It can be found at:

Vestavia Hills, AL Considering Red Light Cameras
Despite some residents' concerns over red light cameras as "big government" and "an encroachment on our personal rights", the city council of Vestavia Hills, AL " voted 4-1 to authorize the mayor to contract with Phoenix-based Redflex Traffic Systems to study traffic patterns at various intersections to determine if they warrant electronic cameras."

Opting out of Google Location-Based Services
I found this interesting info. We can opt out of Google location base service by appending "_nomap" (without double quotes) to our WiFi SSID. So if our SSID is called MyCoolWiFi, it becomes MyCoolWiFi_nomap.
The next time our wireless device (eg: an Android phone) sends info about the WiFi access point to Google location server, Google will remove our access point from their database.

Contributors of the Week 2011-11-07
This week we are recognizing alandb. Alandb took the time to do a thorough write-up of the technique he used to install map updates directly to SD card for his 755T. After many trials, he found an approach that worked and was nice enough to share his solution with the whole community.
Thank you alandb!

Discrepancy with KFC in USA file
There is a KFC about 2 minutes away and it says the distance is 5.3mi (general booth blvd-hubbel dr), but yet there is a KFC 10 minutes away and it say the distance is 2.5mi (first colonial rd-laurel ln). I think they should be reversed. Both in Virginia Beach, VA.
