Just an observation

My 1st gpsr announces the street name and the 2nd gpsr I got does not. While using the one that does not name streets, it occurred to me that this might be safer, as I was not looking for street signs to match Jill's announcements. Is that a correct assessment or am I wrong in my reasoning?

Proposal: GPS to be used for mileage tax

The US government makes a lot of money from fuel taxes. With the move to higher mileage vehicles, the amount of fuel used will decrease. So will the revenue gained by taxing fuel.

To keep money flowing into the treasury, they're considering a by-the-mile road tax using GPS to determine how far you travel.

EDITORIAL: Toss your ticket Washington Times

Red-light cameras are making their return to Virginia. Don't believe the propaganda that this has anything to do with safety - it's all about money.

Escort's SmartMirror

First of all, just wanted to say hi. I have been on my speed countermeasure and Facebook kick lately.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has purchased the new Escort SmartMirror. It is a rearview mirror with a built in GPS. Looks pretty cool.

Navteq Mobile

Got this email from Navteq today, pitching the Navteq Mobile web site for viewing on a PDA or cell phone. Doesn't compare to traffic routing with a GPS, but it's useful information and it's free.

Contributors of the Week 2009-06-22

This week we are recognizing AJ500 and Phranc.

AJ500 has done a fantastic job collecting all of the Fuelman Locations around the USA. I will be making a POI Package this week for this group of files.

Phranc, You have become one of our top posters. I love your humor and your helpfulness. It is really nice to have knowledgeable people like you in the crowd.

Distance to next city

I have a little Streetpilot 530 and it does not have the ability to display the distance to the next city without a lot of trouble. Is there another model or brand that can do this automatically or with a simple screen touch while driving?

US DOT rejects Daytime Running Lights

The US DOT just published an entry in the Federal Register denying a Petition for Rulemaking filed by General Motors in 2001. The petition wanted to make Daytime Running Lights (DRL) mandatory for all vehicles sold in the US.

Chit Chat Thread for the week of June 29th 2009

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

MaryAnn Melby AKA Miss POI

Billy Mays Dies

sad Billy Mays, pitchman icon, dies after hitting his head on a rough airline flight.

POI Alerts

I have a POI file that I have loaded that covers Ohio Wineries.

I have a NUVI 750.Yesterday I set the Garmin to take

me to a favorite winery. This was the first test of

the file. The alert went off, as expected as we

approached the winery. We passed several wineries on

the way that are in the file.......but no alarm sounded.

Flight Simulator X and Garmin GPS

I just purchased FSX. All the planes have a Garmin GPS. Kind of fun to use the Garmin GPS in a plane.

Clean Website well put together

Just wondering if Drupal was used for this site?

After browsing around ... the site is well put together. Easy to find links, easy to navigate. The colors work well, just overall impressed with the way it works.

Google City Tours

http://citytours.googlelabs.com/

Apparently still under construction, since it's in Google's "Labs" section, but it's open. I hope they're still working on it. It appears the route sequencing algorithms they're using still need some work.

And I don't see any way to download the waypoints. Yet. Think they'll add that?

Computer Crashed

My computers motherboard recently fried.
So I took the HD out and installed it on a computer at work to retrieve some stuff.
What do I need to 'transfer' from this, to my new laptop so that I don't loose my Garmin info [Nuvi 760]. I have Mapsource also.
I am coming from XP to Vista 64bit
There seems to be 3 folders I could copy but don't know if all these are needed.

New GPS user

Hi Everyone. I'm new to the GPS world. Recently purchased a Garmin 255W. I was suprised to find out you could download so many different things ..( POI's Cars, etc.)

I look forward to driving around, and hope that I can use some of the POI's offered buy POI Factory.
