Computer Crashed

My computers motherboard recently fried.
So I took the HD out and installed it on a computer at work to retrieve some stuff.
What do I need to 'transfer' from this, to my new laptop so that I don't loose my Garmin info [Nuvi 760]. I have Mapsource also.
I am coming from XP to Vista 64bit
There seems to be 3 folders I could copy but don't know if all these are needed.
C:\Garmin [seems to have Mapsource etc]
C:\Docs & Settings\.user.\Application Data\Garmin
C:\Program Files\Garmin GPS Plugin

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Paul

Crash

You can copy any data files but not programs. Any programs like Mapsource and POI Loader will have to be reinstalled on the new PC. When programs are installed other tasks are done like writing entries into the Registry.

There are programs like this available:

http://www.amazon.com/Laplink-PC-Mover-Moving-Kit/dp/B000I3C...

Notice this one does not say Vista compatible. I have no idea how well they work. I just reinstall the program, especially switching between OS's.

EDIT: It says Vista on the photo of the box, but not in the description?!? confused

Thanks for your info.

OD you think I need to download my maps again from My Garmin so that I get mapsource installed on the laptop?

Don't anything until you reinstall programs on new laptop.

Save what you have on your office computer. Don't anything else until you reinstall programs on new laptop. Then ask Garmin where the files are stored (if you don't know) and then transfer them.

Better yet, ask someone who knows what they are talking about.

Garmin customer service helped me

I recently formatted and rebuilt my hard drive, losing Mapsource in the process. I explained this to the Garmin customer service agent, and he reset my account so that Mapsource could be downloaded onto the "new" hard drive. Very accomodating.

If you left the original map download file on your HDD, then you can copy it over to the new drive and simply run it again to install Mapsource.

As a backup, after I updated the maps on my nuvi 660 and installed Mapsource on my PC, I burned the original download file to a DVD and then deleted it off my HDD because it was so big.

If you didn't save the original download file, then log back into MyGarmin and see if the file is still available for download. They give you 14 days (I think) from the day you purchase it to download it. If its been more than 14 days, you will have to call Garmin, explain your situation very nicely and see if they won't allow you to download again.

I just got a new laptop and want to load Mapsource on it - I do have the original installation file (from 5/09 when I got my free update). Wondering if the 8 digit code will work or if I should call garmin. I thought I read somewhere that you can have 2 copies of Mapsource. Any advice?

mapsource

I have mapsourse on two computors and I used the same code for both. If I remember right you just can't be on both at the same time. Not sure now as I only use one at a time. I also had to have my laptop re done once and I reinstalled mapsourse from you disk and use the same code. good luck

backup

You might want to talk to some of the people from this company, they may have an answer to your questions. I purchased a device from them for cloning hard drives.

Mapsource

When I purchased and downloaded the 2010 maps, I was able to install Mapsource on both my laptop and desktop PCs.

Success

I simply ran the original exe on my laptop and it worked like a charm - i did have to attach my nuvi during the process, and did not have to enter an unlock code. It all worked out fine - thanks for the replies.
