Welcome / open talk

Chatty Kathy thread for the week of December 17th 2007

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Hello everyone, would anyone be able to assist me on how to attach an alert(sound/icon) to a poi I've just downloaded, I'm not sure if you need to make an new folder for the alert or have both in the same folder as your poi's........once I solve that issue do I copy the name of the poi and attach to the alert??

Navigon

I recently saw a GPS unit on one of those shopping channels which had realistic graphics of intersections with overhead signage just as the actual location. I think the brand name was Navigon. Does anyone have any experience with this unit and if so is it any good? confused

GPS units that announce street names......

Anybody know what the cheapest unit (any make/model) is that does this?

Thanks!

Garmin C330 2008 update says that my C330 don't have enough memory. Why?

I have owned a c330 gamin for a year or so. I hooked my garmin up to my computer and went to the Gamin site and checked to see if my gamin was updatable. Their site said that it was. So I went to circuit city and bought the 2008 map updates and it says right on the software that c330 will work. I am now trying to update and it says that I don't have enough memory to update it.

GPSr deals

Consumer Reports has a long list of current deals. Does not include the recent 480.00 Nuvi deal at Costco: http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2007/12/gps-deals-onli...

I thought WAAS had been around for a while

Interesting article on Yahoo News. Makes it seem like WAAS is new or something.

Chipset

Ok, so what is everyone's opinion about what a chipset really is. I hear people talking about upgrading to get the G chipset (which I am under the impression it is the same as the siirf chipset).

In my opinion a chipset is a set of circuits, not software that can be updated from firmware, perhaps I am wrong, what do you all thing?

Link for Photos

Probably a dumb question, but how do you put a link to a photo on this forum? In layman's simple language.

POI Directory

I was in Paris not long ago and got into a cab which had a GPS unit. I told the driver where I wanted to go and he pulled out a directory, about 2 inches thick, looked up the hotel, punched in about 4 to 5 numbers and off we went. I figure it must be something like a telephone directory for use with a GPS device. Probably loaded with a POI file indexed to the numbers in the directory.

storm in oklahoma

as u have read and seen on tv, ok has been hit by a real ice storm. over 1/2 million out of power. trees down and blocking many roads. my gps showed me many different routes arond blocked streets. i never thought id love to hear the voice of my c530 girl friend say "recalculating".
