Creating POI files

Formatting

I have created simple, multi-lined poi files using just my basic text editor. I have had no problems.

The other day I placed one of my poi files that I was having trouble with into my spreadsheet program to see if I could find my error.

Creating a POI file from scratch - Raw Data

I have been working on a project to create a POI file for my use. I am trying to make the Latitude and longitude data as accurate as reasonably possible without actually visiting the location. Here is the method that I am using.

POI Memory Full

I was just updating my pois' on my C340. I got a message that the pois I wanted to load were too much! I had to reduce the number.
The poi file is now 1.25mb with about 15,000 points. This loaded OK. Does this sound right to you?

What is the best way to insert a recognizable line break in a POI file?

When using Excel, Enter can be used, but it sometimes caused errors. Does anyone have a suggestion for inserting line breaks that are easily recognized across a diverse range of platforms without causing any errors?

Suggestion for Batch Converter or Process to Convert Addresses to Latitude/Longitude

Does anyone have a process or can recommend a software application to import multiple addresses from a .csv file and correlate the data to latitude, longitude coordinates?

Program to create POI's

I've been trying to create a few personal POI's using the CSV format. I've downloaded two programs, NuviEditor and POIEdit2007 and they both have advantages/disadvantages.

POIEdit2007 only shows columns 1,2, and 4 in their display. Column 3 cannot be viewed. And it doesn't have a way to change the long/lat from the map. But I can load/unload CSV files.

Duplicate Text

In my POI that I'm creating with notepad, there are entries like the one below. A handful of entries have the street address line in larger font after "Reading" (the heading line). That is, the street address is repeated twice, first where it doesn't belong and second where it belongs before the city/state. Why?

Interstate Exits

I am wanting to create some POI Files for Interstate Exits but I am having a hard time finding the Resources to get the lists. Does anyone know where I can find the List for Interstate Exits? I think this is a Flaw in Garmin that you can't put in for Example. I-40 Exit 125. Any help would be greatly appresiated.

Speed Warnings Unwanted

I have entered my own POI's from a CSV file. Many times I get speed warnings, but I did not include any formating.

my files have four columns
Name
Lat
Lon
Desc.

The last one I have placed "'s in so the address and phone will be on separate lines. I don't have any spaces between "" and is in the following format:

"6 New England Executive ParkBurlington, MA 01803(781) 273-3388"

Using a GPS on trips

One thing I have learned, which may be common knowledge to others, is how to use my gps when planning a trip.
This is in reference to using a Gamin 350 which does not have detour capability in it.
Here are some things to think about when doing this:

1. I use googgle or yahoo to plan my trip.

2. I then create a directory in my Garmin->Currently Loaded called "Trips".

Adding extra info into POI

I'm creating a church POI and would like to add service times. Would it cause any compatibility problems if 1-2 lines were displayed on the GPS? It is fine with my C580. Specifically, I'm using notepad and putting the service times after the zip code and before the phone number, all within one double quote.

Can the csv file still be converted to gpx?

Tim

Adding a POI update.

How (or can) I find the GPS coordinates on a Garmin C550? If I don't have a street address I don't know how to submit any sites to another's POI list.

Wav to MP3

I've done it before, a million times, but now my software is expired and I can't find a free app that I can download for my wav to mp3 files so that they are compatible with my lovely newly created redlight and speed camera POI's (thanks to all of you on that forum post).

Anyone have a program suggestion? Quick, Free, Easy?

Mac POI Loader

Fairly new to the POI scene and I'm having difficulty finding the errors attributed to a few things happening when I load POI data with proximity alerts required other than Red Light and Speed files downloaded from this site which all work fine.

Nuvi 255w
Mac Leopard OS x
POI Loader for Mac
CSV2GPX converter ( normally just use the csv file but tried this as a last resort )

Unknown string in Speed Camera CSV file.

Looking at the speed camera CSV files, I see something that I don't understand.

In the description field, there is an odd alpha/numeric string. In the example below the string is .024qt. What does this represent?

"Speed Camera 80 KM/H .024qt"

What is "My Locations" intended to be used for?

Looking under my user name I see several items listed, with "My Locations" being the third one, below "my account" and "my buddylist."

If I enter information, where will the lat/lon and location name wind up? Is it supposed to be used as the lat/lon/name for my house, work, etc? Or is it for
my favorite places?

I'm thinking about starting work on a NYC Subway Station file if there is still interest.

What do you think?
