POI Memory Full

I was just updating my pois' on my C340. I got a message that the pois I wanted to load were too much! I had to reduce the number.
The poi file is now 1.25mb with about 15,000 points. This loaded OK. Does this sound right to you?

Yes that is about the level nine holds. I have needed to thin out some of my files.

Favorite Memory Size

Is the Favorites memory much larger than the POI memory?
Chuck

.

No, it's much smaller.

That unit can hold 500 Favorites.

It has approximately 2MB of space available for Custom POIs. This translates to space for somewhere around 18,000 to 20,000 Custom POIs (give or take).

That unit will not read Custom POIs from the SD card.

c330

I was able to get a few thousand more in my c330. You have to consider what files matter to you (make it regional or national), make sure you are not loading any mp3 files as you can't listen to it anyway and it will eat some space and decide if you really need all those icons.

I did not find that many to be a problem and got along just fine.

How many

I have about 70,000 POI on the muvi 760.

without a card

Parse your CSV's by State?

My nuvi 750 claims room for 500 points, I have not tried overloading yet. Seems silly to load all 4100+ WalMarts when there are only ~100 in VA. Likewise 800+ Honda dealers with only ~30 in VA. When traveling out of my home region, I can make State or Regional lists.

500 is the max for Favorites. POIs are not a problem as long as you have space on either the unit or a card.

standards needed

Some people may be able to justify a full country full for some POIs (frequent travelers, or people who work in a profession related to the POI). Most don't need or want a full country full for many POIs. It would be easy to extract just your state if people consistently used state labels in their POIs (with programs like AWK or GREP). Unfortunately, we don't have a good standard for state names, some people use the capitalized 2 letter postal code (my preference) but others spell out the state name or even use some other form, such as "Miss.", "W Virginia", "W. Virginia" or "Pa.", and I've even seen different forms used in the same POI file.

Also, things are complicated by both national POI files and state POI files for the same location. It is hard to know if they are based on the same data or different data, and if different data which of the files has more up to date POIs for your state, and I expect it is harder to keep multiple sets of POIs current.

By State

POI Verifier will extract all entries in a POI file by state, Load the file for your localized travel plans such as 3 states combined. This is an excellent addition to your GPS related software.

Standards

It is not difficult to do a find and replace on the CSV file and use the different variations of a state like W Virgina and W. Virginia and change them all to the 2 letter Caps postal code.

worst case is difficult

It may not be hard, but it may well lead to missing some. I've seen my state as N Carolina N. Carolina, N.C. as well as capitalized versions of the state and the normal 2 letter postal code, and there may have even been misspellings that I missed. When dealing with a small file it's not a big issue, when dealing with a large file it does seem reasonable to at least ask the contributor to be consistent, and I don't see any reason to not provide guidelines on what format is preferred.

The worst case, of course, is no state name given at all. This does make it hard to extract your state from a national file, yet a number of the files here at the POI factory are lacking any state information.

I like the idea ...

... of having everything you need/want available all the time. I put a 2 Gig SD card in my 255 and with the POIs I've installed along with a few .wav files I have under 13 Meg used. And one of the .wav files is on the large side.

I guess if you don't have the room you do need to comprimise but I like the idea of downloading a POI file and not thinking about it.

It's a good thing that there's GPS systems or I would be ... always lost!

If you find a file you

If you find a file you really want to download and has the problem with how the states are listed or not listed. Why don't you contact the author through the email contact tab and suggest it?I have found that the members are more then willing to make changes when I located coordinates being off or new locations.

Most members put a lot of time in some of these custom poi files and not all of them have problems.POI Fctory has some of the best custom poi files you can find.

POI SPACE

I have A 260W NUVI and have loaded 202,659000 of poi files not way points. The 260 holds 500 WAY POINTS. My card is 512 have more room then i need .Every one must be talking about way points not poi space.

.

No.

The OP's question and the subsequent discussion is about the c3xx StreetPilot line which (unlike the nuvis) cannot read Custom POIs from the SD card and has a limited amount of space on the unit for Custom POIs.

Limit on custom pois

chaspoi. As posted above you have 2mb of space for custom pois. You should be able to put a few more in.Have to pick a file that will not push you over the limit.

I owned a c340 for over a year and passed on to my son.If you leave out the icons and stay with just the custom pois if will help free up some space. As a suggestion maintain two files on your computer for custom pois. One for downloading to gps and another for backup poi files. Then you can move them back and forth as needed.
