My phone won't xfer contacts, so I figure if I can upload my contacts via csv or gpx and allow me to access them from the custom poi screen and dial directly from the Zumo, I can live with that. (I have 2 conversion programs, but can't seem to get the format right to accept phone numbers). Any suggestions, or is there a better answer to my problem?? Tx!

Try GeePeeEx Editor. You can try the trial version for free. It should work beautifully for you.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
Hmmmm. OK I'll look closer

You may find, that you can use the "Send by bluetooth" function on your phone, to send them to the Zümo, (one at a time) - rather than accessing them in-situ on the phone.
Otherwise: GeePeeEx Editor lets you create gpx files containing dialable phone numbers - (and also has a facility for 'finding' them in existing csv files).
In this application, though, there is a complication. You're not wanting to create navigation-based POIs - you probably want an ordered list - one that you always see in the same order. (Normally, POIs are shown in distance order, from your present position.) You might therefore, want to enter some 'fake' coordinates.
This requires a bit of thought, but something like identical latitudes, with slowly incrementing/decrementing longitudes, should do it...
...once you've picked a range of locations, you can probably populate the fields using Excel (having exported as multi-column .csv from GeePeeEx Editor, and then re-import them, to be re-written as .gpx)

Phil,
Aren't you making this too tough? Why not just spell a few letters of either name once you get to the proper POI file -- "Favorites". Scrolling through a long phone list is not fun.

Probably!
When I played with this in the past, I found it annoying that the list was forever being presented in a different order.
Maybe it's just my pedantic nature
