Interstate Exits

I am wanting to create some POI Files for Interstate Exits but I am having a hard time finding the Resources to get the lists. Does anyone know where I can find the List for Interstate Exits? I think this is a Flaw in Garmin that you can't put in for Example. I-40 Exit 125. Any help would be greatly appresiated.

Might be another way.....

Interesting question. I don't think any of them will allow an exit number to be used as an "address".

Depending on exactly what you are trying to accomplish, there might be another way around it.

My Magellan has an "Exit POI" function but it only works for the next exit you are approaching on your route.

Even if you have a "search for POIs near XXXX", you would need a "real" address to center the search.

You could also use 'Where to?' "Intersections'.

Input the Interstate route number for the first road and the name of the road that is accessed by that particular interchange.

Interesting!

A very interesting project!
And a difficult one.....

To really make it shine, I would say it should include the additional information thats included at the allstays.com site.

Oddly that site seems incomplete tho.
Heck. It doesnt even have I-290 in IL! Thats a MAJOR artery in and around chicago. (shrug..)

Yet...again...overall, it would make for a killer POI collection.

OH exits

As an experiment, I posted the Ohio Interstate and Turnpike exits in a POI. The coordinates and names were derived from the allstays.com site. That was the easy part -- the additional info suggested by dood would be more difficult.

Ohio Interstate Exits with Descriptions

I posted an expanded version of the Ohio Interstate Exits that includes the descriptions of services available at each exit.

The description uses html tags. They display OK on my nuvi 850, but I don't know how they'll do on other units. I used GeePeeEx Editor (great program!) to preview what the descriptions might look like in other Garmin models. Seems OK.

Would someone test the expanded version and let me know the results?

Long Lat Coordinates

I look on allstays.com I havethe exits listed but i could not find the coordinates where did you find them on that site?

You don't find coordinates at allstays.com

You don't find coordinates at allstays.com as far as I ever knew!

I use MS Streets & Trips to get the coordinates of the exits > Just my personal choice.

You can also just use google earth to get coordinates. Might be a little labor intensive for what you are trying to do?

Coordinates

No, the coordinates are not readily available. I programmatically extract the coordinates from each webpage.

As I mentioned above, I created a POI for Ohio. If there's enough interest, I could create Interstate Exit POIs for other states.

.

AJ500 - Sorry, but I must be blind. What is the name of your POI file? I couldn't locate it on the POI list.

Not Blind!

Sorry for the confusion. I should have waited until they were available for downloading.

I uploaded the files right before posting here. So, there should appear after Miss Poi processes them.

I think the subjects were:
Ohio Interstate Exits (I see that one is now available)
Ohio Interstate Exits with Descriptions

Interstate Exits Work In Progress

Ok all I am uploading what i have so far on my Interstate Exits Project any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my First POI Project. I am willing to do what ever I need to get this done. I just need some pointing in the right direction. The name of these files are: I-40NC-TN.csv,I-95 NC-SC-GA-FL-VA.csv, I85NC-SC-GA.csv

Thanks in advance for the help.

Question for the Forum

I can fairly easily create CSV or GPX files using the coordinates and descriptions for each of the Interstate exit links on the allstays.com site. That includes the By State and By Internet Number links. The recently uploaded Ohio Interstate Exits with Descriptions is an example of a by state POI.

The coordinates are not precise. That is, they are generally at the intersection and not at the ramp. There's only one waypoint at each exit rather than one for each direction.

I don't want to create & upload POI files that are not precise enough or of little use. So, my question is, Would they be of any use? They might be used to see what services are available at an upcoming exit. Or, they might be a starting point for someone wanting to create thorough Internet Exit POIs like some of you have already done.

Thoughts?

AJ

Interstate Exits

I would beable to use them. I am a basketball official and a lot of times I have to meet my partners at for example I-40 exit 125. And i will want to get back to that point and would want to go to my custom poi and just pick that exit and have it take me to it. I have the MSN content for my garmin 760 so just having the exit numbers would help me a tremendous amount.

Thanks
Garrison

Which Ones?

From your previous posts, it looks like you could use NC-SC-GA-FL-VA-TN. Any other states? You can modify the files to delete the Interstates that you don't want.

I have a Magellan 5310. It has the interstate exits in it available for routing. In fact if you go into "Intersections" and enter a freeway as your first road you cannot enter a street as the second. You enter EXIT # and it will route you to that Exit.

Some of the Interstate Exit POIs are available

@ncaaref

I recently uploaded the Interstate Exits for the states you want. Some are already in the list of POI transportation files.

Each state includes all of the exit data derived from the allstays.com site. Download and see if they meet your needs. If you don't want all the Interstates for a particular state, you could edit them out. With your GPS receiver, you should be able to search for a specific Interstate exit.

AJ

Can't find where the exit files loaded to.

@AJ
First of all thank you so much for doing this. I downloaded all of them and ran POI loader when i went to where my custom poi's normally load they were not there. Where does it load them to? thanks
BTW my Device is a Garmin 760

Interstate Exits

Perhaps someone else can help here. The Exits Custom POI should be accessible like any other POI. On my 850, they are under the Extras menu.

On my PC, I have the Exits POI in a sub-folder named Transportation under the Custom POI folder. The POILoader loads from the Custom POI folder and the Exits POI appear in the Transportation folder on the Garmin.

Does the POILoader say that the files were loaded successfully?

AJ

POI loader says yes

The POI Loader says that they were uploaded but nothing is there i put them in the same folder as my other POI's. My custom POI's show up under extras as well. These just didn't

I'm puzzled too

Have you tried isolating by just loading one of the Exits POIs and none of your others? Same problem?

CSV Format

AJ:

I know this is an older post, but I am wondering if it is possible to get interstate exits from all states in CSV format?

Thanks!

what do you mean

What do you mean by "Interstate exits?" If you want the lat/lon, then yes, the state can provide that. It may cost you because of the amount of data. If you are looking for what services are there, then no, those are not state property. You would need to have addresses and go to each county for tax records.
