Program to create POI's

I've been trying to create a few personal POI's using the CSV format. I've downloaded two programs, NuviEditor and POIEdit2007 and they both have advantages/disadvantages.

POIEdit2007 only shows columns 1,2, and 4 in their display. Column 3 cannot be viewed. And it doesn't have a way to change the long/lat from the map. But I can load/unload CSV files.

NuviEditor has a wonderful editor feature for changing the long/lat from the map. But it only handles GPX files.

Is there some program available that will let me see and modify the long/lat and then save as CSV's?

Also what's a preferred bulk geocoder?

Bulk Geocoder

There are several batch or geocoders available. Batchgeocode is one, it handles about 100 locations at a time. Inputting the information takes the time, as each piece of information is in its own column, and then when the geocoder runs and regurgitates the input garbage, you need to have some expertise with a spreadsheet program to reformat the file.

I use MS Excel and save to a csv file.

GeePeeEx Editor

You may want to check out GeePeeEx Editor. http://geepeeex.googlepages.com/

Despite its name, the program works with both csv and gpx files.

The trial version has full functionality but is limited to creating five waypoints.

For less than $20, I highly recommend this program.

Ditto - get GeePeeEx Editor

Easiest program to work with...

Looking at CSV

Along with the other recommendations, this program will allow you to look at the data within the CSV. It will show all the columns and seems to be an easy edit. Not all things to all people but a start I suppose.

When I used the trial version, I could not save it as a csv file. I think it can only be saved as a gpx file. Is that correct?

From my recollection the trial version was fully functioning but with the five waypoint limit.

On my licensed version, to "save" as csv, select File, then Export As CSV.

Let us know if that works.

Yes.

+1.

This is by far the simplest technique and minimizes file size and transfer time. Fill in columns A,B,C and D and you're done.

a google or yahoo map in the program. Unless your Excel is different than mine, the mapping feature isn't there.

I want a program that can look up long/lat and/or modify the long/lat in the program by looking at a map and then save it as a csv file. GeePeeEx looks like the the best so far.

If you don't have Excel and want something for free

If you don't have Excel and want something just as good for free that runs on Windows, Mac's and Linux try Google Apps "Star Office 3.0". The following link should get you to the download site.

For what it costs to buy, and as much time as he puts into it, a referal would probably be 2 cents....smile

It is a great program.

OK, sorry. You're correct, you have to grab the geocoordinates from one of the many programs. I've got a couple - - one does a single address while the other processes in batches.

I've tinkered with Phil's program and like it - - it's quite slick, no doubt. I'm not sure if it will crank out a .csv file. I've had some recent (bloat) issues trying to load .gpx files on to my nuvi. All in all, generating these custom POI files is tedious regardless of what software support you have.
