Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? - December 2012

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Washington, DC Speed Cameras

The news tonight says the DC County Council will likely reduce fines for speeding from $125 to $75 per instance.

That was the good news.

The bad news is that the Council is likely to approve "dozens more cameras" all over the District. They meet next week to decide.

Anyone want to guess what they decide???

Florida, banned from manually typing or reading texts

TALLAHASSEE — Drivers would be banned from manually typing or reading texts, emails or other electronic messages while operating a car under legislation filed in the Senate Tuesday.

GPS that allows customization

I'm looking for a portable GPS unit that would allow me to program my own route restrictions.

I drive a coach bus, and currently there are no GPS units that conform to what I need. I'm trying to find a unit where I could do my own road restrictions.

The one that I presently use, is the Garmin StreetPilot 7200, but that has been discontinued for a while.

Any ideas?

This week we are recognizing spokybob!

Spokybob has been a POI Factory regular for over three years. He consistently makes my list of top five people with the most posts per week and he was helpful in keeping all of us up-to-date on bargains in the Black Friday/Cyber Monday thread.

Thanks for all you do to contribute to this community, spokybob!

OEM GPS devices

I'm in the early stages of thinking about buying my next car. I was looking at the Subaru Outback with Eyesight. However, you can't get Eyesight without getting the Suburu GPS, and according to Subaru Customer Service, there is no mechanism for importing POIs into a Subaru GPS.

This week we are recognizing Box Car and Mahoney!

Box Car is a regular on the forums providing knowledgeable feedback. He also helps us with the always changing MD speed cameras.
Mahoney is also a long time veteran of the site. He maintains a large number of files and has been doing a lot of cleanup work on some of our orphaned files.

$25 Amex Credit on 11/24

To promote small businesses, American Express is giving a $25 credit for a single transaction of $25 or more at participating small businesses on November 24th.

I did this last year.

What To Do When Asked for ZIP Code at Pump

Canadians have a postal code, that's totally different than the American Zip Codes. eg: M2L 1Z8

Some gas pumps ask for your Zip code when you swipe at the pump and the Zip you enter must be the same as on the mailing address for your card.

One suggestion, was to use the numbers in the postal code and add two zeros on the end. I somehow recall that it worked many years ago, near Florida.

Money Saving Idea!

Shell has a Fuel Rewards Network (FRN) - http://www.fuelrewards.com/

Not a credit card - but a card you can pick up at paricipating Shell stations. Then go to the above site, spin to lock in you initial discount (per gallon, for the next fill up) - anywhere from $0.05 to $0.25 off per gallon.
