Adding POI to DriveAssist 51-S

Hi Garmin Support Team,
"After many years of use my previously registered Garmin NuviCam6 has failed and I've replaced it yesterday with a 'DriveAssist 51 LMT-S with integrated Camera'. As I have a stored database of numerous personally created, and essential 'Custom POI's from my NuviCam6, I enquire whether I can use 'POI Loader' utility to transfer them for use on my new device. I don't wish to experiment blindly on my new device, hence this enquiry today. All updates have been applied to the new DriveAssist-51 via Garmin Express and it's registered on 11th July 2021".

I've sent the above question to Garmin Support today and received a very quick and polite reply from Michael advising I should follow this link:
https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=GVuNLr5hDf3NezcXCkPFL8...

Whilst the provided Garmin Support link information is helpful I forgot to mention to Michael that my stored personal "Custom Poi's" back-ups are actually within a Windows 10 folder, and in csv format, which I created and edited / updated in "Notepad" or "Excel" and thereafter overwrote those on to my old NuviCam6 using the "POI Loader" utility. Unfortunately I cannot do a 'Device to Device' transfer of custom POI's data as Michaels link above suggests because my NuviCam6 literally went up in smoke and is totally burned out and inaccessible.

My question now is whether I can still safely use "POI Loader" utility to transform the backed-up csv compilation to "Custom POI's" under 'Categories' on my new DriveAssist 51 LMT-S and access them for use accordingly? I use Windows 10 64bit for 'Garmin Express' version 7.7.1.0, and 'POI loader' utility v2.7.3.

My apologies for this long winded post, any help is most welcomed
Kind regards. JOHN

Yes

Unless I'm missing something in your post, custom POI files in csv or gpx format in a Windows PC or Mac computer can be installed with Garmin's POI Loader program to a DriveAssist 51.

Adding POI to DriveAssist51-S

Hi CraigW,

You are quite right, Custom POI's can be added from PC in their csv format using POI Loader. I've always used it on my other Garmin devices but I'm unsure whether it can be used on my new DriveAssist51-S without crashing it in some way. I'm playing things cautiously so I'm asking members if they had personal experience / knowledge of the procedure. As you know the POI Loader does the conversion and allows transference to the SatNav automatically or by way of Manual mode if desired and overwriting the existing 'on device' one.

Thanks for your helpful feedback, have you by chance achieved transference onto a DriveAssist51-S or know of anyone who has?
Cheerz,
John

I have the DriveSmart 55,

I have the DriveSmart 55, same basic unit. You can add those POIs exactly the same way you can add POIs to all the Previous models. If you follow the procedure that Craig gave you, you should have no problems. The actual way of loading POIs hasn't changed.

Adding POI to DriveAssist 51-S

Hi phranc,

Thanks for your contribution. As said in my reply to GraigW, the procedure which he advised is the same as the one I've always used to date, but I needed reaffirmance that nothing had changed over the many Garmin model variants. As you have the DriveSmart-55, and it basically being the same unit, plus you having added POI's successfully, I'm now happy to carry out my own custom POI's onto my new device. Within my own business I've always advised my staff to ask if they're unsure about anything, I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't 'practise what I preached,' so to speak, hence my enquiry to Garmin Support and our forum herein.

Cheerz,
John

Adding POI to DriveAssist 51-S

Hi phranc / CraigW,

A quick update on my Custom POI's situation. Everything went smoothly, installed many of my original updated POI's that were on my NuviCam6 before the device burn-out. I used POILoader as reaffirmed by you Craig and applied personally created verbal notification POI wavs snipits to appropriate ones. I used the "MANUAL" mode and "DISTANCE" feature in that utility. The DriveAssist 51 is small compared to my NuviCam6, but its operation is fundamentally the same 'under the bonnet', which is nice grin .

It does have a couple of small updated features but it's like an old friend already. grin

On a new note I'm going to have a crack at using BaseCamp, a piece of software not used by me before. I don't know what the learning curve is like but I'm sure going to give it a whizz.

Kind regards, and thanks for your help.

Some people don’t find BaseCamp intuitive, although with any new to the user software there is a learning curve. You might find the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8RfVSx6QQY to be worthwhile. Note that at last count I think the full series was up to 7 segments.

Adding POI to DriveAssist 51-S

Hi John,

Thanks for your advice and web link, it's very useful. Yes, I believe it will be a steep curve, but things rarely come to those who dont have a try. Keep your 'fingers crossed' for my success.

Well

This is one of the best tutorials, although aimed at Zumo users it's applicable to all who use BaseCamp

Adding POI to DriveAssist 51-S

Hi sussamb,

Yet again, along with another member John PA, you too have provided me a fabulous tutorial for BaseCamp. Thank you both so much.

I've just taken a quick look at your tutorial link pdf's and it definitely ticks every box. I'm now really confident that BaseCamp will not be the 'ogre' some people paint it to be.

With the current "lockdowns" apparently being eased I'm looking forward to some well-deserved leisure time and good trip planning via BaseCamp facilitates that.

Many thanks once more for both yours and 'John PA's help, it's such that makes our forum exceptional.

Kindest regards,
John
