Verify locations

Once I create a custom POI with long/lat/name in a csv file, what is the best way to verify the physical locations? I thought of using Google Earth.

I personally use...

I personally use both Google Earth (for visual verification) and MapSource (for positioning on the very same map that Garmin units use).

I find that the same coordinates can differ as much as being on the opposite sides of the street between the two. However, this doesn't imply one is 'right' and other is 'wrong'.

Go there

Not to be flipant, but if you can physically be at the POI and capture the reading, then that is going to be the most accurate.

My second choice is to use a GPS oriented mapping program like Mapsource.

If the POI is not within the map area of Mapsource, then I'd resort to Google Earth.

I thought that too...

...but now I'm not so sure.

Back in July, I made myself a Garmin format road map of Malta (by scanning a paper road map), but was quite under-whelmed by the accuracy I achieved sad

So I thought I would record one or two spots (that I'd seen on Google Earth before I travelled), just to do a comparison. At the time, the Nüvi said +/- 20', which sounded good to me, but in reality is probably insufficient.

Plotting these points on Google Earth on my return, showed me to be at least 10' from where I knew I'd been stood.

So, I would say, that it depends on the accuracy you're getting 'on-the-day', and the standard of calibration of the particular bit of Google Earth you're comparing it with.

In my particular case, I think it was errors in the paper original that caused my issues.

Thanks

Thanks to all for your info. I wanted to create a custom POI of FoodNetwork TV show " Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives". The places are located all across the US and I knew I couldn't physically check them before I built the file. If I ever start traveling again, I thought it would be fun to visit.

Dumb Question

But how does one use Mapsource to verify a location? I'm lost here.
