Garmin talk

Can anyone point me to a list of map display features for the newer Garmins?
Specifically I'm looking for ones that have the ability to show custom pois while on the live map display, and any flexibility for choosing sets of pois to display.

I joined this forum many years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Garmin community here. I remember saying that I could never see myself ever doing without my Garmin, initially a Nuvi 1310, then a 1490 and now a Drivesmart, but the time has come with 2 cars in the family that have infotainment systems that run Google maps to put my Garmins out to pasture.

One of the features that some older Garmin Nuvis had that I miss is the world clock. It would show the current time in hours, minutes, and seconds. Plus, you could easily select other time zones. My current Garmins show the current time, but do not display the seconds.

What features do you miss from older Garmins?

Updated Nuvi 68 to 2025.20 and got the large JCV file (D9673050A.jcv).

Unit connects fine to the PC in Mass Storage mode. File is in .SystemJCVD9673050A.jcv

Now, after simulating some travels, I don't seem to get any large junction views as I did previously. All the highway exits nearby used to pop them up, but I don't see them now.

So I was thinking about how long it's been since Garmin released an update for their Drive Series. It used to be every year and now it appears to be several years between releases. With the use of Google Maps, Waze, etc. along with Car Play and Android Auto, it's no surprise as mentioned in this thread:

I'm at my wits end. No matter what I try in 2 different laptops with 3 USB ports each my Garmin 2797 is not recognized. It does not show in "File Explorer" or in "Computer Management". The 2797 is set for "MTP". I have tried every USB-A to micro USB cable I have including one with a Garmin sticker on it. I have tried each cable connected to the GPS even by shutting down and rebooting.

On my nuvi 1450 after updating the maps to the latest ones. It will say "The following map data is more than a year old and should be updated" and then it shows "CN North America NT 2025.20" underneath that and a long to purchase map updates which I already have a lifetime subscription for.

Any ideas why it has started doing this now?

After a couple of hours of driving, the RV890 has always displayed a "Need a Break" screen with nearby businesses listed. Selecting one will create a route to it. This is an option though, and it can be disabled in the settings menu.

Version 7.24.0.0 has become available as of this morning. Take note that on the Garmin forums some individuals are prompted that to install you should open the existing version as "Run as Administrator". That was not the case for me.

Checking the Task schedule Library seems to indicate the task to run GarminUpdaterTask at 2 AM every day was reset back to "Ready" status.

It seems there have been no new posts for 9 days, I wonder what the longest duration of "nothing new" has been. Obviously Garmin GPS devices are now so good they don't have problems that need fixing, or folk are just not using them.(Likely the later)

Sadly I can see the end of this forum in the near future.

I made an out of town trip last weekend and heard the sound file for the upcoming rest stop!! I had installed the POI file weeks back on recommendation of a user here.

Whoever made that file has a great sense of humor. A couple flute notes and the sound of water gushing. LOL

Has anyone checked the gmapprom.img file after updating? I have and it still has the last img file from March of this year in the .system file, checked the properties of the file with the same result, yet the unit itself tells me the map is now at 2025.20.

My Nuvi 1350 failed due to the USB power port. My daughter gave me her Nuvi 1450. I have used POI-Factory files over the years successfully.

I managed to transfer the redlight-camera.csv file from my computer to the Nuvi1450 unit. I noticed that the Garmin POI-Loader changed the file on my computer from csv ending to following Redlight-camers.csv.gpi

On the most recent release of the Garmin HERE maps (2025.20), I noticed that there is the option for Environmental Zones (Always Ask, Avoid, Allow) in Navigation. It wasn’t there for the 2025.10 maps, so they must have added it again. Although, I can’t seem to find a single example of an Environmental Zones in the U.S. does anyone have any ideas? There isn’t much info about them online.

Can anyone else confirm if any of their units that aren’t supposed to have the full North America map set are having the full NA maps installed when installing the 2025.20 Maps? So far, I have full NA on my Nuvi 55LM (only supposed to be lower 49 states) and my Drive 52 M (only supposed to be US and Canada).

Took my garmin out of moth balls and found a new garmin update.
7.21.0.0 to 7.23.0.0.
Thats when I noticed a new map update. Such wonders all in a day.
Garmin update done. Now Ill try the map.

New Map update and Express won't run. I've ran it before to do updates but today a no go. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Ive gone into the registry and deleted all references and reinstalled it. Still no Garmin Express user interface. Task manager has it running.

Update: Never found a solution. Had an image of Windows 11 from Jan.
Reloaded that and all is working now.

The fastest update yet,less than 20 min. Garmin Express ver 7.18.4, map NA 2025,20 DS65 updated on a Windows 7 desktop.
Have not yet taken it out for a spin to see what's new, probably little but I hope it fixed the random "wackie" speed limits that the previous map all of a sudden generated. School zones miles from a school, random 60/30 kph for no reason.

Driving home from shopping at city 45 miles away….
HOME was destination..,
First the roads disappeared.
Then the car graphic drifted away from the road.

Then it rebooted twice.
Then it knew we were going home, but road was straight. Car was not on road route.
??

When we got home, look closely at Garmin.
