Does Garmin Repair GPS Devices?

I have a Garmin Zumo XT. It sometimes has difficulty keeping an electrical connection through the mini USB port. I contacted Garmin and they quoted me $130 for repair. Would they actually repair the unit I have or do they replace it with another refurbished GPS?

Might be cheaper to get a

Might be cheaper to get a local phone repair place to solder in new port?

Does Garmin Repair GPS Devices?

That is a good point. I sent a message to a place that does repairs, but I haven't heard back, yet.

PalmDR

They seem to still be in existence but probably a good idea to call first. Details at https://www.palmdr.com/

If you can solder

If you can solder, this video may help. Should work on all GPS units.

Garmin Repair

What about a cracked screen. I have a Garmin Drivesmart 76 i just noticed the screen is cracked but is still working...so far. Will that cause it to stop working

Cracked screen

I would also like to know the answer to the cracked screen problem. I have an older nüvi 2555LMT that years ago fell off my windshield and the screen hit the gearshift, cracking it. In my case though, the screen illuminates but that's all, no reaction to my touch. It would be nice to have as a backup!

As the DS76 is a current device Garmin will be able to replace the screen. At worst they'll offer a replacement for a fee. Older DriveSmart and Drive units will also likely have replacement parts available. Even older devices such as the nüvi series may be a crapshoot. Garmin will more than likely offer a replacement - for a fee - for those devices.

Zumo

Sooner or later, if used enough, those GPS USB connectors begin to have problems. I've had good luck extending the life of some older, more expensive GPS units by using a short 6" USB "whip" cable.

I leave it plugged into the GPS permanently and hold it in place by fastening it to the back of the unit or mount. This way, the connector doesn't flex and cause disconnects. I then make the necessary repeated connections via the female end of the whip cable.

Another preventative

…is don’t let the cable dangle from the back of the GPS. This puts a downward force on the connector. Wrap the excess cable around the unit a few times and that will remove the weight from the connector. This can be a bit of a pain when removing the unit but not as much pain as an intermittent working GPS.

Powering A Garmin Zumo XT From A Battery Power Bank

To put this in perspective, what I am doing is using a Garmin Zumo XT on my e-bikes. I started out by just using the internal battery. That has pretty limited run time and will drop to 40% screen brightness fairly quickly even when starting with a battery fully charged.

Until now, I have extended the run time by connecting to a battery power bank from the mini USB port to the USB-A port of the power bank. The problem I am having is it loses connectivity.

On another GPS forum, someone with a Zumo XT2 has connected the vehicle wiring harness to a USB 5 volt to 12 volt adapter.

However, the OEM Garmin Motorcycle Power Cable has a 12 volt to 5 volt converter. That won't be necessary if the cable is going directly to a USB port once they are rated at 5 VDC.

If I use the Garmin Motorcycle Power Cable and eliminate the voltage converter, should I add a regular USB connector or a USB-C connector? I have read that USB-C is generally considered superior due to its faster data transfer speeds, higher power delivery, and reversible plug orientation.

Magnetic mount.

I've always preferred the Garmin models that have magnetic mounts where I can leave the mount permanently installed with cable attached. The USB port on the device therefore gets very little use. Not sure though if any zumo models ever had a magnetic mount. I suspect not.
