Funny Story

Well you had to be there funny. It's not so funny in print now I'm reading it, but I'll try to make it a little funny. It did make me wonder if anyone else has had a funny conversation with their unit. Their GPS unit that is.
My wife and I were driving around one day just plugging in locations to see how "Jack" managed to get us there. Jack speaks up "in .7 miles take ramp to William 500 Tate Avenue, on left". I thought I misunderstood, radio playing and all. Then Jack says "in .2 miles take ramp to William 500 Tate Avenue, on left". I'm thinking to myself, maybe what we are looking for is in the 500 block..but that didn't make sense. Besides, there was no ramp to the left to take. I'm not disappointed because there has been a lot of road work in this particular area and the mapping system has just not caught up yet--no problem. I exit to the right, Jack speaks up "recalculating", "in 500 feet turn left toward William 500 Tate Avenue". This time I was ready for Jack and he had my complete attention. I know what I heard for sure this time. Then I just started laughing, wife now knows for sure what she's known for the last 31 + years - yeah, he's crazy and lost it for sure this time. Anyway, the name of the road we were on is called William D. Tate Ave.

Search feature?

Is there a way to search for specific topics on this site? Santa brought me a Nuvi 350 which is my first foray into the whole GPS thing. I have been lurking here since the day after Christmas and have learned a lot so far. (Great site by the way). I am just looking for relevant post in the beginning until I get comfortable with what I have before I delve into what else is lurking out there. Thanks for everyones help so far. This seems to be a great source of GPS knowledge.

New to your site...

Hi. Thanks for creating this place. I found it because I just got a Nuvi 360 and wanted to find out about POIs. I found much, much more than that here.

Your discussion threads are wonderful. Much needed. And much appreciated. I had some specific Garmin questions and posted in that forum, after reading many previous posts. Reading those posts made finding you so worthwhile.

Again, great great job. Great resource.

Thanks for POI

I just bought a GPS unit and I am glad to have found this web site. I hope to contribute as much info for the Maryland area as I can. any suggestions please reply.

Hi, POI newbie here

Just wanted to say hi, and thanks to all of you who've assembled some really great POI files here.

I do have a couple of questions that are probably really easy to answer, so thanks for any help you send my way:

1. Once loaded, will custom POI's show on a map that is displaying a route--for example, if I'm going from home to a client's place, will I be able to visually see the closest Wal-Mart on the map, or do I have to search? I'm pretty sure favorites show up on the route map, right?

Deleting Custom POI's on the Garmin 660

I just used the custom POI loader for Mac book from person on this site.

I found POI's for Philadelphia - near me - Then I did the conversions and placed them in my POI folder in the nuvi. (I did this on my Mac) It did work, as they then showed up on my Nuvi.

I later discovered the file has coordinates, with nothing else.

I want to delete them from my Nuvi. I picked the folder up from my connected Nuvi on my Mac and put it in the trash. This was done while connected to my Mac Book.

Does a POI file always have 4 columns?

Does a POI file always have 4 columns? I have a dataset of 2300+ waterfalls in the USA I would like to contribute but I only have three columns of data lat, lon, name. I guess if 4 columns are required the fourth column could be country. I don't currently own a GPS unit so I am interested in advice because I would like to get one soon.

POI's

When the new maps are out for the garmin's sometime later this year will downloading them and updating them to your unit also update the POI's that are factory set in the unit as well? like for instance any new Wal-Mart stores that were built since the past year will they now be in your unit after install? Thanks

Is there a POI file with all the Weigh Stations?

IM a truck driver and i'm trying to find a POI file with all the Weigh Stations along US highways and interstates. I have a garmin nuvi 660 and if it beeps just before you get to one it could save you a lot of money by preventing you from passing one by mistake. it does happen.

Temporary Adios to my smiling face...

Well, getting ready for the "New Year grand road trip", so won't be on the forums much. Maybe once or twice during the week over the next several weeks. Am going to be doing some serious testing though with my Mio.

Leaving Tuesday for Dallas, then back, then off to NYC, then over to Chicago, down to Indianapolis, back to home, then over to Atlanta, then down to Tallahassee, then Orlando, Jacksonville, then back to home.

Any thoughts on logo

Any thoughts on what you'd like to see in your logo? I do quite a bit of that in playing around with web sites, but would need some input on what you want to see.

Qwerty keyboard????

Hi All-Brand new to the Nuvi 350. So far I'm blown away....find myself driving around looking to screw it up, but can't. My only complaint is the alphabet keyboard. Is there a way to change it to a qwerty. THANKS

POI Factory News 1/5

The last couple weeks have been busy at POI Factory. The pace has really picked up since Christmas. I think a lot of people received GPS gear over the holidays and are finding their way to the POI Factory. It's nice to see that many are sticking around and becoming regular contributors.

Behind the scenes this week, Miss poi and I have been catching up on maintenance after taking a little time away over the holidays. I just finished some programming for the POI Database tool so that Miss poi can use it to update the Red Light Camera file. The tool now checks for possible duplicates (nearby POI) as you enter or update a location. Robert660 and GC0110 have also been actively using the tool as part of the beta test we started in December. It still needs a little work before it's ready to roll out to everyone on the site.

I received your note via the contact form today, and I've sent a response via email.

(An email I tried to send you a couple weeks ago was returned undeliverable, so I just want to make sure this new message arrives.)

Hello

Hello,
I just installed a nav unit into my xc90 volvo. Starting to get use to it. Any pointer on using GPS and how to be safe?
