loading poi"s to c550

I loaded two files to my 550 this morning with the following results. I put red light camers in a file called "internal" using POI Loader. This went in under Garmin L and the program said 1800+ files were loaded. I put Casinos USA in a file called "external" which I wanted to go to the SD card. I loaded to memory M and the program said 500+ files were loaded.
When I disconected from the PC and powered up the GPS the first time, the c550 said it was loading updates, all seemed to go well.
But when I tried to look at EXTRAS there was nothing there. I have not taken the GPS out in the car yet, but I'm not sure anything got loaded. What did I do wrong?

RE: loading POI's to c550

With the Garmin unit connected to your PC, select the drive (the Garmin Unit) under My Computer. There should be a single folder named Garmin. Inside that folder, you should see a folder named POI. If it is not there, you need to reload the POI's. Make sure that you are selecting the appropriate destination i.e. the drive where the Garmin is.

loading POI's to c550

Thank you very much for your help. I didn't think of looking at the devices using my computer. The first time I looked the casino file was in both the gps and SD card. After I reloaded I got the red light file on GPS and casino file on SD card.
When I power up the GPS a screen comes up asking "New data found on card. Would you like to install this data so that it will be available if the card is removed?" I have been saying no. I'm not sure which way to answer?
Thanks again MKAHN

New data found on card

I always respond NO. If you respond YES, it will copy the data over and install it on the GPS. I keep separate files on the GPS and the SD card i.e. don't want to use too much internal memory. Also, I'm not sure if it combines the data between the card and the GPS or simply replaces it.

The file that resides on your GPS and on the SD card should be called: poi.gpi. That one file will contain the data of all of the individual POI's that you load at one time. There would not be a file called Casino or Red-Light on either of the devices if you loaded them properly with POI-Loader.

loading POI's in c550

I understand that the file in the device is called: poi,gpi but while I was there I used Notpad to look at data, which verified red light poi's or casino poi's.
Thanks Again

P.S. us 75 year olds take time too get it!

Notepad and poi.gpi file

I didn't realize that you could view the file with Notepad. Might come in handy sometime. Thanks

Renaming POI.GPI

mkahn wrote:

There is, however, nothing to stop you renaming them to Redlight.gpi, or whatever after POI Loader has created them. This gives a little more flexibility - but at the expense of a bit more messing about smile

Also, once you have these separate files, you can use them to influence the order in which the POI's appear in the list. (I find that Speed and Redlight cameras are places I hardly ever want to go to - hence I like them down the bottom of the list...).

One way to do this, is to use any old card in your PC that POILoader recognises (I actually use an old 16MB CompactFlash card - it's left in the PC full-time).

Run POI Loader, specify the card and then rename POI.GPI to Whateveryoulike.GPI. Repeat for each category of POI and them copy them from the card to \Garmin\Poi on the C5xx.
If you copy the one you want first, reboot the Garmin and keep repeating till they're all done, that is the order they'll appear in the list. Now in future, you can replace or delete each category separately. (It remembers the order of files it's seen before).

Of course, if the card you use is an SD card, you can just put it in the C5xx and let its built-in copy function do it for you. (Put it in, say "Yes" to Copy and then "skip" until you come to the one you want.)

If you don't have a card, you can always use the Garmin itself, in the same way. This is more fiddly, because you have to reboot it after each copy, if you want to influence the ordering.

It's easy than I've made it sound smile

Mkahn.....In one of your previous

In one of your previous postings, you were kind enough to offer any assistance to any of us with the c550 model. This is a model that I purchased for my hubby and I just loaded a POI file in it. The "extras" icon was selected and the Poi appears to be named Custom POI even though that's not the name of the file. If I add more POI files to this unit, is there a way to show their individual names or do they all load in the c550 as "custom pois"?

Any other c550 users can also assist me with this question..smile

POI files in c5xx

There are two answers to this.

The standard answer is that once you click the Custom POI button you will see each of your individual files. If you loaded with POI Loader 2.0.4.1 (beta), you can actually have one level of subfolders. In other words, if you had one folder on your PC desktop (that is what you point POI Loader at), you can have multiple folders in their i.e. stores, locations, traffic, etc. Each of these can have individual POI files. When you select "Custom POIs", you will see the listings for each of the subfolders and any POIs that are at the main level. When you select one of the subfolders, you will see the individual POI files that were inside that folder on your PC.

The other method that has been discussed involves selecting the Garmin device as a drive from your PC. You can then rename the poi.gpi file to whatever you want and then load another one. The newly loaded one then becomes the "Custom POI" and the one you loaded is listed under the name you gave it. You can do this for multiple files, ending up with several xxxx.gpi files on your c550.
