Addicted to POI's

Since I came across this forum, I have been addicted to creating POI's that are useful to me and will aid me in my vocational and recreational pursuits. I have downloaded a few that are extremely helpful from this site and also I have created several POI files with my Client Locations, Family and Friends Locations, and three that I have shared here for my fellow Georgians, Georgia Wineries, Post Offices, and State Parks. I expect that this new obsession will continue for some time.

Arrival time calculation

Hi everyone. Thanks for supporting such a great fourm. Does anyone know how the Garmin C330 calculates the displayed arrival time? Does it consider posted speed limits or does it use average drive speed. Is it smart enough to know that freeway driving will be faster than rual road driving? Any insight would be great.

Google Earth

I downloaded google earth and all that shows up is a black screen. Did it not download all the way???

Data sources?

Does anybody know where much of this data comes from?

It says that many of these files are updated once or twice a year from "an outside source." Some have tens or hundreds of thousands of points, what outside source / company is doing all this work?

Images in posts

I received a note asking how to include an image in a post. Right now it's a manual process, but I'd be happy to attach pictures as needed.

Here's an example in one of Skip's earlier posts:

example of post with pictures

Just send me a note via the contact form, and I'll give you an email address to use for sending the picture.

Garmin Map Source and City Navigator version NT8 lat/lon Defaults

It seems the Garmin Map Source with City Navigator version NT8 defaults to the lat/lon hddd'mm.mmmm" format which when the numbers (reversed) are entered into Word Pad for a POI file, the location can be as much as 20 miles off!

After experimenting with Google Earth and rechecking the the lat/lon coordinates in Map Source, I found if I changed the Map Source settings to lat/lon hddd.ddddd, then created a POI file, they coincided with those in Google Earth and were spot on when I traveled to a POI location with my Street Pilot 2720.

Bluetooth

Does anybody with a blue tooth phone use their gps as the hands free feature? My nuvi has bluetooth and i messed with it with my wifes phone and it seems great. My question, "is it worth me getting a blue tooth phone now?"

concerns about theft

I just received my GPS for Christmas. I was just going to mount it on the windshield with it's little suction thing. Am I right to be concerned that someone might try to break into my car to steal it? I didn't realize they were such a high theft item. Now I'm thinking I might want to rethink the suction thingie.

Adding POI's

I’ve tried to add my own POI’s, but I’m doing something wrong. I’ve gone to http://www.discoveryowners.com/cginfolinks.htm and opened the zip files. Some had lon and lat, so I copy and pasted them to excel. Others had none, so I copy and pasted them to http://gpsvisualizer.com/convert?form=address to get the lon & lat. Then I transfer them to excel. Every time all the info ends up in the 1st cell only. What I’m I doing wrong? I’m looking for a list of Wal-Marts, Flying J, and campgrounds.

New Week 1/1

It's after midnight GMT, so we've officially started another week at POI Factory.

New active users this week:

redrider
blackacre
jburr
jeffa62
tomstack
Corky Bishop

After a week on the road visiting family, Miss poi and I are back and fully focused on POI Factory.

In January, I will make some improvements to the POI Database module we tested in December and then roll it out for use by everyone on the site. This will make it easier to create, find, and download POIs at the POI Factory.

Toll roads

I was wondering if anyone knows of a POI or an add-on that would inform me of toll roads. On my second use of the Gramin C340, I was routed to a toll road that I was unfamiliar with and unprepared to pay. Luckily, I managed to retrieve my EZ-Pass transponder from my glove compartment before I got to the toll plaza.

I am particularly interested in toll road information for the Midatlantic and

? on downloaded POI's

I am new to having a portable GPS (my last car had a built-in). I recieved a Garmin C550 for Christmas from my Father. And I love it. The major difference I have found so far is the ablility to update, and download POIs. I downloaed several from today. But, now I have a question. I downloaded about 5 different sets, Starbucks, Walmart... And I actually downloaded 2 different sets of Starbucks (I LOVE Starbucks).

Boat ramps...

Hi all,

New to using in car navigation, but have been using GPS on my boat forever. I was thinking it would be a neat item to have a POI of boat ramps. I'm starting to compile a list and will post once it gets pretty comprehensive. Just wanted to see if there was any interest out there in such a beast????

dashboard/windsheild/car vent mount for Garmin Nuvi 350?

I just bought the Garmin Nuvi 350. It came with a windsheild mount, and a "dashboard disk" to attach it to your dashboard (with an adhesive). From reading past reviews, it looks like it used to come with a car vent mount, instead. Did they stop including this because it was horrible, or because they wanted to save money?

I don't know about the windsheild mount.. it seems like it would be too easy for the suction cup to lose suction, and then have it fall while I'm driving. The dashboard mount would be ok, but I have a 2000 nissan sentra.. both sides have airbags, and the middle has a compartment thingy.. there is no good place to stick it on. I was thinking about buying a different kind of car mount. Does anyone have one that they really like? Also, if you use the suction cup windshield mount, what do you think of it?

What is the diffrenece between Garmin C series and NUVI

Hello friends,

I just bought Garmin C330. It is a pretty good device. It has only one draw back. It does not announce street names but displayes street names on the screen.
I know next model C340 does it but it is not available in Future Shop or Bestbuy in Canada. These stores carry NUVI models which are capable of this feature.

I will appreciate if someone can explain the diffence between these two series from Garmin.

Speed limit

I am very new to this so please forgive me if this has been addressed.
I was wondering if there is a database for download that would give speed limit indicators. One would think that these indicators exist simply because most units calculate ETA.
I can understand why the GPS manufacturers would not want to display this info for fear of liability, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a way to get it.
