Thanks to POI Factory
Just wanted to say thanks to all who put the POI's together. Just picked up my Garmin 660 two days ago and didn't realize that I could customize the POIs. Thanks to you I have tons of POIs to keep my eyes on.
Can't wait to hit the road tomorrow to test out all the files I uploaded today.
Woot!

Canada's Automatic License Plate Recognition Program
WOW! I was sent this today from a friend of mine in Canada who's working on part of the development. Not sure if you guys have seen this before but this is some really hot stuff.
We need to hire the Canadians that came up with this technology and move them to the US!!!
I've uploaded the video to my web site and you can access it at:

Geo Caching with a twist
I have recently discovered that Ritz camera runs a photo contest that involves navigating to certain coordinates, solve a clue, then take a picture of the subject. I have been told that you can get the details at the ritz web site, however, after a search, I have not been able to find the details. Has anyone been involved in this?

setting up model pages
I've started setting up a new section with model pages. We'll use them to organize FAQs, posts, and other model-specific information on the site.
I've started with newer Garmin models that work with POI Loader. Right now, the pages are pretty basic -- almost empty, actually. But I don't think it will take long for us to turn them into something more useful.

Nuvi and USB (charging low battery)
I was just informed that if the battery dies in your Nuvi, the power cord which comes with the 660 serves no purpose. Only connecting via USB will the unit charge itself and then be able to boot itself. On anyone's next trip, be sure to bring the USB connection also.. This is straight from Garmin's Tech Support

GPS Screens
Can anyone tell me, which GPS unit screen can be adjusted to be seen best, in all lighting conditions. I understand some screens are not very visible in bright daylite, but can be too bright for nite driving?

Help
I am looking for a web site that compared all of the Car Navigation GPS units, in all areas with photos. I would like to find this site if it is still in existence? I am looking to purchase a new GPS that is smaller than the laptop.

Speed cameras Chicago
If you are traveling through Chicago on I 90/94 Dan Ryan be very careful of the construction speed posted 45. There are plain white vans with photo cameras and the move so there is no set location. You will know if it gets you because there is a bright flash as it takes both the front and rear of the vehicle. Its set for 1 mile over the limit, so be aware.

GPS, A Real Life Adventure!
We were traveling across Texas to Austin and thought we'd check out Luckenbach to see what the song was all about. Before leaving Luckenbach we asked our nuvi350 for a route back to Austin. We set the GPS options to 'Bus' (to depict a motorhome), 'Fastest' route, and 'Avoid Unpaved roads'. It directed us north of '1376' onto 'Jenschke Kunz Road' to 'Barrett Road' onto '290'. The wife says "You sure you want to go this way"? She noted the Official Texas State Map didn't even show this road; but I reminded her "the map was free and the GPS cost good money; therefore, the GPS is right. Besides, we're in the car ... not the motorhome, so let's give it a try".

Signature suggestion
May I make a suggestion to the users here? I've seen this in some other places and it adds to the user-friendliness of the site.
The suggestion is that each user include their GPS brand/type/model that they are using in their signature block. It let's others in on what GPS units are being used out there and would give other users the chance to communicate with one another on experiences with the various makes and models out there.

Radio Shack POI's
I've been thinking about creating a Radio Shack POI file. Would anyone out there be interested in such a project? I'm an employee and I MAY be able to gain access to the store locater database (with permission of course) to aid in it's creation.

I just bought a Garmin nuvi350 to replace my 7 year old Magellan GPS315. I wish there was a site like this back then when I got the old Mag'.

Uploading of Bitmaps
I attempted to load several .bmp's for several of the current .csv files listed here. Uploads at this time will only accept .csv format. Creating .bmp's to go with those .csv's allows the unit to display a icon instead of just a dot or square.
GPS Mounts
There is a website: www.mountguys.com that supplies GPS mounts for several popular units - Garmin - Magellan - etc. They also have mounts for motorcycles, boats, etc.
Check it out.
I have purchased a Garmin mount from them. It arrived in 6 days and works great.
