Garmin 2730

I am new to the GPS updating, I realize this is basic but my 2730 came with a CD 8.00 map, isn't that the latest? If I download poi's do they just add to the info when using?

Yes, v8 is the latest

Yes, v8 is the latest version of City Navigator, but many/most of the POI files here cover things that might not be included in the built-in POI's. Plus those on your unit might be out-dated.

Also, there are many other benefits to having Custom POI's such as being able to set proximity and speed alerts, being able to set custom bmp icons, and being able to see them further out than the built-in POI's.

If you download Custom Poi's from here or anywhere else or create your own, it is added information to what you already have.
It will not affect your maps (your current V8) meaning they don't actually "write" to your maps, so none of your map data is changed.
Think of your Custom Poi's as a separate data base of locations to augment what is currently "attached" to your maps.

Your "firmware" will have more frequent updates available than map updates.
Think of that as your "operating system"

So, Map updates, Firmware updates (garmin calls it Unit Software) and Custom Poi's are three different things. Your 2730 current firmware version can be found here.
