just saying hello
Hi Gang!
Nope I haven't forgotten about this great place I have been busy with other things. One thing that many here would enjoy and that is geocaching. All things gps fascinate me and many others here. Plus I hope to proficient with gps so I can navigate safely through wooded areas as well. Eventually I want to get a gps that I can use for both my motorcycle and also geocaching and hiking. This will not replace my i3 because I don't think one unit will do ALL things well. JM and Maryann are doing a bang-up job here as usual and I noticed many who were rather "green" in technological sense have learned so much here. That's something to be proud about. It's the friendly nature of this site that nurtures people afraid of technology and allows them to embrace it. In my travels I have found a few from this forum at the geocaching.com forum. Notably Fratermus and he certainly is no slouch with technical things. So many contribute to the greater cause! There is no doubt in my mind that poi factory is the #1 USA site for automotive navigation. I thought maybe we should delve into handhelds but that would be a mistake except for the technical part. Enough rambling for now.

How to Find
If you have, or know the Longitude/Latitude, is there a website that lets you enter them and find that location on a map, without using a GPS? Dumb question??

Fix for New Discussion Topic Bug
The unread posts feature was not showing new discussion topics unless they had at least 1 reply. I've just installed a fix for this bug.
The new page looks a little different than the old one but works basically the same way. Any posts from the last two weeks that you haven't read will show on the list.
Now that the bug is fixed, I'm planning to add some new features like "mark all as read".

Love "Unread Posts" Option, but..
Is there anyway to mark all the UNREAD posts to READ so that I can start with a clean slate? In other words, I am still a relative newbie to the site but have 16 pages of UNREAD posts to read. Would be nice to start right now and just see the latest users inputs rather than those back when the site just opened.
Finally, I am usually most interested in the General Discussion and Garmin areas. Is there a way to just see the UNREAD posts in that certain areas rather than all areas?

Maryland Day hiking ideas
I live right outside DC very close to the C&O Canal near the Billy Goat Trail.
Would anyone have any suggestions or lists for some good day hiking trails around me? I really like the Billy Goat Trail A section because of the view and all the rock hoping that one has to do. It's also just a little less than 2 miles so it doesn't take very long to get through.
I have a Garmin c550 so i can load some good starting points. I also have simple Magellan 100 which could help me find the exact start of the trail but i don't think i can load any trails because there is no base map.

Motorcycle Routes
Not sure if this is the right forum but I was wondering if anyone is aware of suggestions for routes. I am planning a motorcycle trip from Bend, Or to San Diego, Ca and thought someone might have experience creating a route.
Thanks,
Darren

Finding Coordinates
I found these links to be very handy, thank you. I get lists of addresses for work and they do not have the Long/Lat info, I run them through these programs and then I am ready to load them up.

poi factory test environmment
Looking behind the scenes --
Today I created some scripts to automatically setup a test environment from a web site backup. In the past this was a tedious process that required quite a bit of hands-on effort.
With fresh data in the test environment, I can now turn my attention to fixing the "unread posts" bug and making other improvements in the development queue.

Another FunnyStory
My wife doesn't know much about my 360. She had to go to a meeting in a suburb of Dallas (Arlington). She wanted to use the GPS. I set it up for her and told her how to get home. I have mine set with a female voice from Austrailia. She and a friend went to the meeting and it worked fine. She set it to come home. However, her friend wanted to be dropped off at her Dentist's office. Once they got off the route home, it started recalculating.

Contributors of the week 2007-01-08
This week we are giving trophies to Sir Cadfael and Dfred1.
Sir Cadfael has spent a huge amount of time and energy starting our new US Weigh Stations file, I know that that was not an easy task .
Dfred1 has just been chugging along making database after database and shows no signs of slowing down.
Great job everyone, we had another fantastic week here at the POI Factory.

business names take to wrong location
Hi I just got the Garmin Nuvi660 and seem to having problems with it. When I select a business name such as target or a gas station or what ever location you want it never takes me to that place. Instead it will take me to a house! Not even in the correct area of where the store would be. Does anyone else seem to have this problem?

Satellite Signal Delay
Just curious, anyone figure out how much of a delay there is from satellite(s) to gps unit? I know for example, between broadcast tv and satellite tv, there is about 7-8 seconds delay. Also, could the delay as well as the processing speed of a particular unit be the reason that some people complain that their units are not "alerting" soon enough? (Considering speed of travel plus signal delay and processing speed). You can notice this yourself, while coming to a turn for example, the distance gets shorter, then you stop, and the distance still gets shorter, then you turn and the distance says turn in 50 feet. Then the map is redrawing.

Active User
This amy be a silly question but how will I know when I become an active user?

Rant: snow...
6.5" and 1 to 3 more on the way before it quits. GPS units are nice, but they can't shovel snow
And I suppose, the traffic/road conditions alert function would be nice too - but, the nearest participating radio station is 2 hours North of me. Oh well. Stay home, drink coffee, & surf the 'net as long as the power holds out...which it should, as it has been a long time since we've had an outage
