Maximum length for "Name" and "Description" fields?

I thought I'd seen an earlier thread that listed the maximum number of characters that can appear in the "Name" and "Description" fields of csv files intended for use on Garmin GPS navigators. (That is, the 3rd and 4th columns in a 4-column csv file.) I've searched all over, but now cannot find it.
I'm thinking of doing a project on highway historic markers, and need to know the maximum length of both fields -- if there even is such.

There are no formal limits defined by Garmin (that I'm aware of).
There are some (huge) differences in the processing of the 4th column (comment/description) by different Garmin Automotive units - the Nüvi 3xx series truncates the information at somewhere between 150 and 250 characters - others 'hang' when this field starts to go beyond the 5000 character mark!
