How often do the maps on the Garmins get updated?

How often are maps updated? Are the updates free?

Speed alert with shorter proximity?

I have a c340. If I enter some speed alerts (by using a file name of "SpeedAlert_30.csv"), the POI Loader creates the speed alert at 30 mph, but it also automatically calculates a distance alert of 1585 ft., which is adds to each POI in the file.

I find that distance alert to be WAY too long.

Even though POI Loader will assign both alerts, it doesn't allow ME (in manual mode) to specify both speed and distance alerts for a specific .csv file. I am forced to choose one or the other, but I don't want to sacrifice my speed alert in order to configure my distance alert to a shorter distance.

GPS Newbie

Wow - this place is fantastic!

I just got a Garmin C340 for my B-Day about a month ago. I picked the C340 over a TomTom One - I guess more for the fact it actually gives the street rather than "turn right". It's simple to use, that's for sure. I've started to download POI's (the reason I stumbled here...lol).

Are there any "tricks" or enhancements for the C340 to download & play with?

Accessing GPS Hard Drive

Reading some of the posts of Garmin users, I doubt whether they can access the hard drive of their GPS units while connected to PC. When you connected to the PC using USB cable, does the GPS show as another removable drive? My c330 certainly does not show like that. Or is their any other way of accessing the internal hard drive to find out how much is full, what is in there etc.?

nuvi "+" dialing prefix

I have a nuvi 360 and I connect to the Samsung A900 via Bluetooth.
When I dial a POI the nuvi inserts a "+" to the number. Example: +1-111-111-1111. My phone does not like the "+." Anyone know how to remove the prefix?

StreetPilot c340 is TOO EASY to use.

I realize this is by design, but the super-simple and barely configurable interface on the StreetPilot c340 is almost too simple for my taste.

The unit is very intuitive -- anybody can learn how to use it in a matter of minutes -- and it is exactly the unit I would purchase for my wife or daughter.

However, if you have owned other GPS units (e.g. handheld) in the past, or if you are just one of those people who enjoy configuring and/or viewing a large number of settings, this might not be the best unit for you.

Does Color Mode calculate sunrise/sunset?

What a great-looking and extremely helpful web site! I have already found on this site most of the answers I was looking for.

(This is my very first post to the site.)

Here's a question for which I did not find an answer: The "Color Mode" on my StreetPilot c340 can be set to a light background ("Daytime"), a black background ("Nighttime"), or it can be set to automatically switch between the two modes ("Auto"). Does anyone know how it decides exactly when to switch modes? My guess is that it possibly calculates sunrise and sunset times based on my physical location and the date, but I can't find any documentation to that effect.

Garmin Traffic Service

I am curious to know if anyone else uses the Garmin Traffic Service and what they think of it. I drive mainly city roads in Washington, DC and there is virtually no information via the service. Is it limited to highway circumstances? Thanks.

Garmin diagnostics screen / reset

Saw this elsewhere, and thought it would be something others here would be interested in - how to get to a system info/diagnostics screen set for Nuvis - works for my 350, should work for others Nuvi models, possibly others too...

nuvi 350 routing question ('a better route is available')

on the last couple of long trips that I have used the nuvi 350 I have got 'a better route is available' prompt.

The prompt came up after a couple of hours of driving... Any idea why it takes so long to determine the better route?

From the nuvi, you can't tell what is better; only option is to accept or cancel the better route option.

Just curious what the logic is to recalculate a better route after driving so far.

nuvi 350 mp3 player options

Am I correct in assuming that the nuvi 350's mp3 player can not play all in random?

I've been playing by song title.

As far as I can tell, the only way to play the songs in random is to put all the songs from the sd card into a program like winamp, randomize it, and then save as a playlist (m3u). Is there an easier way?

POI Files And a Garmin/Kenwood KNA-G510

I have loaded my first POI file via a SD card "all Quik Trip Gas Stations" I have found another one I want to load (redlight Cams) but I can only over write my first file. How do I edit/merge mutiple CSV files. They open in Excell, can I just cut & paste them together then save the new file ?

Garmin USB connect to Computer

I have a new Garmin 192C that I plan to use on my boat.
What USB cable do I purchase to connect the unit to a computer ?? Where is the best place to purchase this cable
The 192c has only one plug in on the back and that is for the typical Gramin data plug.
I have a new set of way points that need be fed into the Garmin 192c.
What software do I use to add these way points to the 192C ??

Antennas from Garmin

I am new to the GPS arena and I read different notes from the group of Garmin owners about antennas. So I looked on their web page and found two antennas. One for 39.99 and one for 99.99. I am not technical but why is there two with such a difference in price? Oh yea, The 99.99 one only fits my GPS - it just doesn't seem fair! Thanks for letting me vent......

Does the Garmin expect you to drive at least 75mph on freeways?

I had to drive my wife to the train station about 50 miles from home, in another city. She punched the station's address into the unit as I drove through our town at the posted speed limit, and it gave us an ETA of 5:04PM. By the time we got the freeway entrance, it had updated to an ETA of 5:03PM.

On the freeway, which is posted at 65mph, both lanes were going between 75 & 80 mph (middle of nowhere territory). We drove at these speeds for about 40 miles, and we were both surprised that the ETA did not update again, considering that traffic was going up to 15 mph higher than the posted limit.

School POIs

I have a Garmin C530. Is there a way that I can set the Schools POI file so that it gives me a speed warning only at certain times during the day? That way I can have it warn me only during school hours, when the lower speed limit usually applies.

Announcement of streets too late :-?(

Is there some way to adjust the response time for a turn say about 400 feet away vs. 200' or less. I found while traveling in Las Vegas this weekend there was many a time too late to turn sad

GPS: For Work or Play?

Do you guys think it would be a waste of money to buy a GPS ( streetpilot C330) just to mess around and have fun with? I don't travel or anything, so I would just be buying it for fun. Do most of you guys use it for actual directions, or mostly just because its cool and fun to have? thanks, I'm just curious.
