POI Question - Alert set to 3 miles

I have loaded some fuel truck stops in my Nuvi 350 and can see them in my Custom POI's. The question I have is do I have to be on the same road as the POI for the alert to happen? It seems if I am just passing by, say on the interstate I do not get an alert. BTW I have the speed set to over 0 mph and distance set to 3 miles.

That is an interesting

That is an interesting thought. I am not sure if you have to be on the same road or not. I also am having trouble with alerts, some of my school zones go off, but then others don't. I have gone and checked to make sure the school is within .5 miles and it always is. I am not sure if totally understand this alert thing.

The distance is by road - not as the crow flies.

When using Mapsource, it draws a 'proximity circle' as you type in the alert distance - which seems like a really useful feature...

Using this method, I defined a proximity alert for my Parent's house at 2 miles. (This is stored in a GPX file as 3218.6880000 metres. Now I understand that it uses metres internally, but the 7 places of decimals is weird ... that's 2.0 miles +/- 4 millionths of an inch!).

Anyway, this alert routinely triggers in exactly the same place, which corresponds to a Mapsource 'Proximity Circle' of 1.735 miles, not 2 miles.

BUT ... if you plot a route from this spot, it is EXACTLY 2.0 miles by road.

So Mapsource's 'proximity circle' is somewhat misleading. This explains why I get no alert as I drive through the area on the motorway (interstate). At no point am I exactly 2.0 miles away BY ROAD, because of the layout of the junctions (intersections).

I will bet that this is also what is going on in the example given in the post.

(and thinking about it, the distance by road might be influenced by all the different options you can set in the unit (ie Fastest/shortest, avoidances etc). This would explain why it seems that you have to be on the same road...it takes away a lot of the variables.)

I have had a Tim Hortons

I have had a Tim Hortons coffee alert go off while on the 407 highway then realized that there is one near the exit I had just passed.
