Garmin talk

With the free map updates, can I download the maps to my comupter and my gps unit? I want to set my routes up on my computer and tranfer to my unit.

For those of us on Dial-up, just ordered the 2012.10 Map update on CD. CS guy said it should ship after Aug 17

I have a few custom maps and accessorial maps on my SD card (e.g. lakes).
Usually I turn these off under the MAP INFO area, so my search results excluded these.

My question is, does this impact the memory capacity of the Garmin 7xx at all - it appears that "activating" a mapset makes it immediately accessible, whereas I would expect a certain load time.

This has probably been asked but Ive had a hard time finding any information in the forum using the search function.

I use the "My Favorite Files" function to keep my POIs updated. How come the updated date shown in the My Favorite Files listing is different from that shown on the actual POI download page?

Are there release notes documenting the changes in a software update? If so, where are they?

I own a Garmin Oregon 300. I am trying to find out how to change the waypoint symbols included and to add to them. I've seen numerous ways but they seem to be for other garmin models. If anyone could point me to a tutorial, or better yet, walk me through it, that would be great.

The maps on my Garmin 255W are about a year and a half old. Is it about time to update them or should I wait a little longer? If now, where is the most economical place to get a map update?

Having said all of the above, would I be better just buying a newer GPS with free map updates? I only drive about 8,000 miles a year, but I do take long trips several times a year.

Does anyone know how to delete phone names/numbers from "most recent list" when a phone is connected via bluetooth?

Before everyone asks, my phone is clear of all dialed/received calls, call history, etc. Problem is old obolete numbers keep showing up when I view "recent calls" via the GPS.

I just joined the site and i'am astounded by the variety and quality of the poi lists available for download.

I would like to download a couple of lists but I didn't want them to all fall under the category of "Custom POIs" in my nuvii 1490.

Is there a way to create "groups"?

I follow all the instructions and the POI loads into my 1390LMT and I can see the file in the POI folder. But, I go to Extras and there is no custom POIs there. What am I doing wrong? I am using POI Loader. I have tried two different POI files, Good Sam and Rest Areas. I am sure it is something quite simple.

I have a 1490LMT that I'm very happy with but I would like to do the following:

When I export POIs from bing.com maps to it, I would also like to export any notes that I might have added to the point of interest.

In addition, when looking at a POI in the nuvii, could I also view the notes that came with that particular point of interest?

So for some stupid reason i decided to format my garmin on my computer now i have no files does anyone now how i can fix it without having to spend much money on it? thanks

Can someone give me an idea on which Garmin unit to buy. We are taking a trip in about a month and I would like to get another Garmin (or other) but there are so many out there, what do you all reccommend????

So I got yet another Garmin. A nüvi® 1350LMT with lifetime map and traffic. Anything out of the ordinary about this unit that I should know. I have set it up on an RV so it will be interesting to see if I can get the leaf to go green! I miss the voice with the British accent. It was more pleasing than the US voice and now they don't offer that version!

In November 2010 I downloaded several csv files from POI Factory to my computer, then to my Garmin nuvi 255W. For example:
McDonalds_USA.csv
Starbucks_NA_Nov.csv
WiFi.csv

Now, over 7 months later, I am sure that there are new stores added to these companies and closed stores removed. So how do I update my csv files?

I know this might almost sound sacrilegious to ask this, but here goes anyway. Could a GPS company, maybe NOT Garmin since they are essentially a direct competitor, but for the sake of argument, say a Garmin Nuvi 1690 or 1695, that has cellular connectivity built in anyway, use that to have BOTH navigation via its regular maps AND Google Maps Navigation?

I realize everyone contributes to the various POI files on POI Factory ... but somehow, one poi file maintainer seems to be responsible for 75 percent of the files I follow here.

I am endlessly amazed ... and excited ... when I see that Mahoney has posted an update to any one of the POI files he maintains.

Can anyone in this forum tell me which Garmin Nuvi is bluetooth compatible with my Sanyo Pro-700 please.I thank-you in advance.

I had a bad experience last trip to New England. Even though I had selected "Avoid Toll Roads" on my old StreetPilot 2620, it kept leading us through toll booths, to the point we were about to go broke.

Then we somehow wound up going through the Bronx, during rush hour, pulling a car behind the motor home.
