Lane Assist (lost after 2012.20 update)

After I updated my 3790LMT to 2012.20, I lost about 95% of the "Lane Assist" view in my area. Did this happen to any of you as well? If so, does anyone have any comments or solutions? I called Garmin with this problem and I was told that it was due to them using their own data with this release as they are no longer using Navteq. I commented that when updating or upgrading to a newer map, we expect more functionality not less. Their Technician replied by saying that there was nothing they could do but we would see gradual increases in improvement over the next many updates.

Are you

Are you sure your talking about Lane Assist which are the turn arrows in the upper left corner of the map screen OR Junction Views, which are the actual pictures that display on the screen showing which lanes you should be in to make the next turn or other maneuver?

If any thing, on my 3790 I'd say Lane Assist is at least as good as it was with 2012.10 and probably there are more times when it appears.

I own 14 GPS, I am quite knowledgeable and yes, lane assists in the top left corner. I lost about 95% of them, I find it interesting that you did not notice any changes, perhaps I should try to re-install the map. However why would the Garmin Technician comment about not using Navteq anymore and that there was nothing they could do?

Lane Assist

I have a 3790LMT and I have all the lane asst, plus more JV than I had before.

lane assist

I noted on the previous map update I noticed that the lane assist for I15 in the salt lake city area disappeared. I just went from layton ut to slc and noticed where I15 and I215 intersect the lane assist is still gone but junction view was there, also they added quite a few for the local streets.

Lost lane assist

This usually means that Navteq is updating and analyzing the roads in your area (lane counts, speed limits, ect.). When Navteq does this, Garmin sometimes takes out some of the existing road attributes, and then they replace the attributes once Navteq completes updating their records. The same thing happened to me where I live. The lane arrows should come back in a couple of map updates, and should portray any relatively new road construction. I could possibly be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the reason. Also, Navteq is still the provider for this information. I think you got one of the many misinformed product support specialists when you called. If Navteq no longer provided the mapping information, then we would no longer be receiving map updates from our lifetime subscription. I think the person you spoke with may have thought you were referring to junction view, because I think the junction views are no longer provided by Navteq, but everything else, including the Lane Assist feature, is still provided by Navteq. The thing is, Navteq actually has lane information for every road pretty much, not just the ones Garmin decides to include. If Garmin wanted to, they could provide lane assist information for every single road, even minor roads. The reason Garmin does not provide lane information for every single road though is simply because it is too much to keep up with. It would be a pain to incorporate that much data and keep it up to date. We certainly would have to wait a lot longer between map updates.

I think that you are right, it would not the first time that I talk to a miss-inform Technician from Garmin. I do hope that they keep providing "Lane Assists" as I find it very useful in areas that are unfamiliar or unknown to me, however having it in 2012.10 and loosing it only to have to wait 2 to 3 updates (9 to 10 months) seem quite unreasonable to me.

Now I think I will delay updating maps

After reading so many upset garmin customers about the new map update 2012.20, I believe I will keep my 2012.10 maps for quite some time. I do not understand what Garmin is doing, and it seems to be very poor customer service, to pay extra for a gps unit for "lifetime" map updates - and then find out that you are not benefited by the update, but they are actually worse. That is very disappointing. The lifetime map updates seem to not be worth it. So I, and others just lose the money. Garmin, much to my disappointment again, must be looking to go out of the personal gps business. They sure act like it.

Just like nearly evertything else lately

Starting with airlines, the cost of the ticket goes up and the customer gets less service. Luggage was free, now you pay pay for more, online meals were include, now you pay. They even sexually harass you for "free" which maybe a bonus for a select few.

Banks that used to have no fees are now charging to talk to a teller or even to use your debit/check card instead of writing a check for each purchase.

A lot of companies also charge you for a paper bill that used to be free.

So in this day and age we might as well get used to paying more for less.

Junction view

Hi since updating my nuvi 3790 lmt to the 2012 maps I have noticed that the screen now splits in 2 when junction view comes up but even though it stays up longer it is not an improvement as it makes the text harder to read ,wish there was a setting to put it back to full screen view ,has anyone else had this happen after updating their maps

I don't know about y'all, but I hate being "USED" for no reason at all.. especially if I'm paying for it NOT to happen.

Here's a previous post I did, download and install the D306003A.JCV (752 MB) file

Link to download the D306003A.JCV file.
http://download.garmin.com/support/2012_20/NA/JV/D3060030A.j...

I have a 2350LMT using the 37xx JCV file (446 MB)and everything works great and has the split screen. I installed the D306003A.JCV (752 MB) file and now the split screen no longer appears, just the junction view appears for a few moments and then back to the map. I compared junction view images from a few routes, the same number of junction views appear between the 2 JCV files on my test routes. I reverted back to the 37xx JCV file (446 MB), I perfer to look at the split screen, showing map and the junction view image at the same time.

Firmware Update 3760

Be sure to update your firmware also, I did an update on maps and all is fine, plus more highway exit view signs. There was also a small firmware update.

Lane Assist

I have a 1350LMT and I updated it to the 2012.20 release. I have more lane assist now than before. Also, the update seems to have fixed some bugs my device had with finding my location. So far...no complaints with this update.

I totally agree with you (if you mean to have the pictured juction view as full screen), I called Garmin and asked for a software update that would allow to revert to full screen as you suggest. I was told by the Tech that he would submit the suggestion but not to get my hopes to high

Don't ever get your hopes too high with Garmin support. Most common resolutions on Garmin support cheat sheet - format the drive and reload or send it back to us.

Actually the split screen junction views are a feature added to the 3790 with firmware version 4.10 and they have been visible since map update 2012.10, if you had 4.10 firmware installed.

I have a 3790T and I just updated to the latest map today and the software version changed to 4.30 from 4.20 but my Firmware version stayed the same at version 2.60

Would you check your versions again to compare here. Mine is completely up tyo date and here are all the stats:

Firmware version: 2.60
Software version: 4.30
Bluetooth: 3.0.35 P55
Pmic version: 822
Tsc Version: 1.16
Audio Version: 2.60
Text Version: 4.30

Been Away

I've been away for awhile, and just read Garmin does not use Navteq now. Does this also include the maps? If it does, who do they use?

Garmin 660

Incorrect.

Garmin still uses Navteq as their supplier of map data. They have said they are using "other sources" for Junction View images.

You are not up to date with firmware. The current version is 4.30. You can download Garmin's WebUpdater software from their website and use it to update the firmware, and all other items available, for the 3790. You only need to update the firmware once to 4.30. There is no need to update each of the 6 firmware updates between 2.60 and the current version.

Will one of you go into Tools, Settings, About, and write down all your versions of all that is listed and post here please as I think you are talking about the software version which is 4.30, not the firmware version which mine says 2.60 on mine.

By the way I have been using Webupdater and there is no firmware upgrade listed.

Versions

Hi I have just compared your nuvi versions with mine and some are different
Software version 4.10
Audio version 2.70
Text version 4.10
Bluetooth firmware 2.60
Pmic 822
Tsc 1.16
Gps firmware 2.60
So some slight differences ,I updated my nuvi about 3-4 weeks ago ,is there a new version already

You are mistaking unit software/firmware (shown as "Software Version" above) and GPS Firmware.

Unit software/software version/firmware is the GPS's main operating system software

GPS firmware is the code used by the GPS chipset.
