Garmin talk

I posted this question for help on the GPS Reviw Net as well.

When I downloaded my latest map, it used a piece of excrement called Garmin Express. The map was installed into my 2555LMT, but not into MapSource. Is there a way to get the current map into MapSource? BTW, I had to uninstall Garmin Express because it was tying up my internet connection too much.

I uploaded a POI file that has 135 POI into my Garmin 1490T.

When I go into the POI file to verify, only about 40 are showing up.

Is this normal as the device will only show POI in a certain proximity to my current location or do I have a different problem?

While this might be purely coincidental, it seems like my home computer has been sort of unstable after I installed Garmin Express. Has anybody else here noticed this? Maybe I am way off base and this is just a coincidence. Anyway, I have uninstalled Garmin Express and I will see what happens.

I have had Garmin GPS units for several now. Just recently I started to wonder about the Detour function. I guess I have really never used it much. I tried doing a search here, but I really didn't find what I was looking for. Anyway, how does it work? How does it determine what part of your route to detour from?

I just found out something which has me curious.
Since I spend the winter in Mexico I have my 855 plugged in to a 12 volt 22 amp stand alone motorcycle battery which is also continously connected to a 12 volt 2 amp trickle charger.
About once an hour the charger shows me it is charging.
Just how much juice does an 855 draw from the small replacable battery?

Trying to find POI's for Super 8 motels. By typing that into the search nothing shows up.
I suppose that means there is none?

I think I know the answer, but has anyone had the problem of the speed camera alert warning (synthesized voice) getting stuck if it gives multiple warnings for the same location? Example, beep beep beep...start slowing downnnnnn spppppppppeeeeeeedd camera aheeeeeeeeeeeadddddd". Only way to reset it is to restart the GPS. Only happens on my Nuvi 255.

I travel for work across the Midwest. Many of my visits are very rural. Some one stole my last Garmin 2 weeks ago but I had to go out this week. Bought what was available at shopko. 50 lm

Can I change the alert distances on my nuvi 260w? When I open my proximity points screen it appears the only option is single or continuous tone; can I set the distances so as to make the rest area poi more effective?

Garmin continues to rely on NAVTEQ and if they were to do the research all on their own, I can see it would take a long time, but I'm displeased with how long it takes them to update easily verified POI information.

At some point, we need off-line(not dependent on cellular) map with something with user vouched system like Google Mapmaker.

Friends just got a Nuvi 2555LMT and I am helping them learn it's use. They are somewhat technologically challenged.

I was going to use Trip Planner to get them from Florida to their home in Canada. They want a particular Drury Inn to be their stop for the first night. I will be installing a location ahead of that to force their route onto the Macon Bypass.

I would appreciate it if someone could tall me where I go to download the latest version of Garmin's Map Updater.

I do not want to use Garmin Express.

When did our longevity on the site start getting posted with our content?

downloaded exspress the other dat and downloaded the new map. But it would not load onto gps. Express showed by 2 nuvi units but kept on saying( connect device) Now today, it will not show that my device is connected. Even on the garmin website.
Any ideas?

Have Garmin nuvi 2555

Just installed Kenwood 6190 double din radio with Garmin. Cant get POI alert sound files to work. Only get a 2 dong alert. Have tried wav and mp3 files also SOX. Anyone have any luck with this radio getting the custom sound files to work?

A consistent complaint about Garmin Express (GE) is that it is always running and slows down Startup times - BUT, for the most part, one only needs GE when new maps or firmware are available

I read on another forum that the iOS version of the SmartPhone Link app is now available.

According to the iTunes documentation, it requires iOS 6.0 or later and only works with the 2013 nuvis (2417/2517, 2467/2567, 2497/2597, 2797 and 3597).

Had a real marathon with my 855 with this upgrade. 855 would not 'use' the large JCV file - tried all combinations, i.e. map/JCV on nuvi; map on nuvi, JCV on SD; map on SD, JCV on nuvi; both on SD - white screen of death in all instances. Finally formatted nuvi, loaded both on it and eureka, success.

Second time I've had to go through this exercise. Maybe next time I'll just cut to the chase.

I recently purchased a new Honda 2013 CRV and it had hands free link with blue tooth. It does not have the navigation package, could not justify spending 2k for the dealer installed system which seemed like old technology. I am wondering if I can find a GPS that would link into my blue tooth system. Thanks in advance for any advice and directions.
