Garmin Express software

For those, who like new stuff. Garmin released new software known as "Garmin Express". Haven't tested it, but according to Garmin:

Garmin Express is your one-stop shop for keeping your nüvi®, zūmo® or dēzl™ up-to-date.

This software is for:

  • Update Maps
  • Garmin Express downloads available map updates to your computer automatically, and alerts you when new maps are ready to install. You can even control download speed and schedules.

  • Transfer Favorites
  • Garmin Express lets you transfer all your favorites from one device to another with one click.

  • Install Voices & Vehicles
  • Browse and install free custom voices and vehicles.

  • Back Up Files
  • Garmin Express makes it easy to back up and restore saved addresses, routes and waypoints to and from your computer.

If you need download there is link to Garmin site:
http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

Looks like improved version of automatic updates software, witch was rather terrible. Maybe this time they got it right.

Thanks for the info.
All software is suspect until it's well tested by users, like us.

Downloaded and Installed

I will start playing with it later but, if nothing else, it provides an automatic or manual backup and a restore option for your device. How many times have we discussed this?

I manually started the backup and it is running now. 1st note - It does not allow the user to select the backup location.

just downloaded

And from what I see so far is very good. It will take a little getting used to, but I'll play some more and see what it has to offer. One of the first things I'll see is how well it syncs between two units.

Update: One of the things I noticed on my 255 is that once Express loads and connects the 255's screen goes blank. Don't see the same blank screen on the 885.

I did notice, and this will be a big help to many is the ability to reload maps.

The navigation is a little strange in that updates, just as web updater only checks for the operating version. You need to go to device and advanced for things such as vehicles and voices.

Thanks to all you brave souls who are willing to try this stuff out without really knowing, especially given Garmin's history with some of these tools, whether it will work or brick your GPS. Thanks to all of you I will be able to wait quietly for further reports before I decide when and if I should give it a try.

Maybe not, but I'll tell you something. You try out that software and do what they call a back up. Then look at it, and come back here and tell me what you think of it. Finding it was just one minor thing.

It may be possible that it doesn't backup data or program files that it can restore from its website when connected to the internet. Just a thought.

I'm not saying they backup anything from your device to their website. I'm saying they already have all the device program and data files for your device on their website and can download them back to your device any time if needed. They only backup the files they can't reproduce. This also would not be a true backup for anyone who choses not to update their devices to the latest firmware. But I am usually at the latest FW and maps on all units so it works for me.

I am just starting some restore tests, I renamed the GPX folder on my nuvi 1450LMT and it restored a new one complete with all files and archives no problem. I'm now renaming a folder at a time and restoring it to see what shows up.

I know what you meant, but the back up it does is more of a personal nature, which I do not want on their site. Seems strange to me that, that is what they call a back-up.

The backup and restore seem to only work for your personal data as Speed2 said. Restore did not reproduce the Garmin, Voices, Vehicles or .System folders. I'm sure glad I had a real backup.

It looks like it will handle MyGarmin and WebUpdater updating or reinstalling maps and FW and can also add vehicles or voices. It also allows you to backup your Favorites (maybe routes too) and restore or transfer them to another unit. It provides a link for all the manuals and FAQs associated with each GPS.

So, is it a good thing?

Would you use this program again if you had a choice?

That is an excellent question

windwalker wrote:

That's an excellent question. I kicked off the program just to try it, and before I knew it, it was reinstalling the 2013.30 NA maps that were already current.
I probably could have avoided the reinstall, but I wanted to see if Express is smart enough to see that I was already at the highest map level. Well, it's not and once the update started, I was afraid to stop it, so I let it finish. (Aside: There went three hours of my life I'll never get back.)
Anyway, the question was, will I use this program again? Part of me says that since the update did go smoothly, and Express now knows that I'm at the latest and greatest release of maps and other s/w, maybe I should just keep using it. On the other hand, I get nervous when things happen automatically, without my expressed written permission (as they say about retransmitting baseball games), so I'm undecided. I'll probably keep it installed until the nex map release in February, then take another look at the process. Also, the program level is 2.0.1.

It seems that there was something that wasn't completely updated even though you might have thought it was. So far it doesn't seem like re-installing the current maps has happened to anyone else. So it might be a good Christmas present for you that Express fixed something that you didn't even know was incorrect, maybe. smile

Update

I installed the program this morning and it was version 2.0.0. I connected both my Nuvi 750 and Nuvi 3590 and the only thing needing updating was Jill. That was taken care of with no issues. Both units had been up to date regarding software and firmware a number of weeks age.

At issue now is the updating the program to version 2.0.1. The program stated that an update is available and will be loaded the next time the program is accesses but that is not working. I rebooted the system a few times and loaded the program and still the settings show 2.0.0. SO I guess I am stuck there but the rest of the program works properly.

Express update to 2.0.1 failed

The 2.0.0 installation completed with no problem. When I started Express, it checked for, found and started the update to 2.0.1. That update failed. There was no indication of what the failure was, just a "Update failed" message. Now when I start the program I get a window that gives me only two choices: Uninstall or Exit. Exit just ends the program, Uninstall fails. Uninstalling from the control panel has the same result. Trying to reinstall 2.0.0 from the installation program just hangs.

So, now I'm stuck, at least wrt Express. I'll have to contact Garmin after Christmas to find out how to manually remove it.

Thanks for the report. I had no plan to even try installing the software right now but thought that a month of glowing reports and no bad issues might tempt me.

For now, I'll avoid it like the plague. Your news, plus reading that for plunder, it did a complete 2+ hour reinstallation of the current map, is probably going to let me think of this program as I do Lifetime Updater--never install, even if the kinks get worked out.

Regarding your inability to uninstall, I wonder if the free Revo Uninstaller might help:

Which version of Windows are you using? Have you rebooted your system after thw update failed?

You can find more information in the logs which are stored in the %TEMP% directory. They begin with "Garmin_Express_" and have a yyyymmddhhmmss timestamp after that.

I had an installation error 0x80070643 on Windows XP. It happened after the install of .Net 4.0 (needed for Garmin Express). Rebooting and re-installing fixed it. Installs on Windows 7 and 8 went fine.

EDIT: The update to 2.0.1 was problematic on all three versions of Windows. I tried manual updates, stopping/starting the program, rebooting. It said the update would be installed the next time the program was restarted, but it wasn't. Finally it updated (on Windows 8), but I don't know what I did...

Weird/Update

Something strange, but not really a biggy happened to me with this new Garmin Express. We all regularly update our units using which ever program we choose. I loaded Garmin express a couple of days ago when it came out. Played with it, and everything was up to date on my 3790 and 3590. Got some squirrel voice for the 3590 but it didn't tell me the 3790 could have it. Again no biggy. My windows 7 had bin acting up and yesterday another program wasn't working right, so i decided to do a reload. I have a ghost file which allows me to be up and running with all my programs with in 15 minutes. What i didn't have was Garmin Express. So i load that, it updates. I plug both my units in. The 3790 is up to date and the 3590 has a map update. HUH? How can that be? I distinctly remember when i got the 3590, that i did all updates on it after a back -up, just like most of us do. I check the map version on my 3790 and it comes up 2013.30. On the 3590 it comes up 2013.10. This unit came with 2013.10. How come it didn't update? Don't know what to make of it. Oh well, guess I better update it. confused

I went onto garmin's web site to see for updates and it told me i was up to date. Go figure. I tried something that normally fails. I let Garmin Express start d/ling the files and I went in and deleted all the maps and the jvc file. It actually completed the update and all says 2013.30, but it didn't give me 2 files i had before. No idea what they are for.
gmapbmap.img and gmapdem.img. I think they are Demographic files. Had to copy them back from my back-up. Also all my map files are a bit smaller, and so is the jcv file. That tells you it doesn't delete these files before it updates.

It seems that the program will go out and check for updates automatically on it's own. I installed the app this morning (it seems to work fine for me) and after about 30 minutes up popped a little icon on the task bar advising there was a update available. Clicked on it and 2.0.1 installed itself.
