Possibility to show ONLY the custom POI Icons on the screen?

Hi all, Yes I am a newb to this site. I am a pc technician for a living and have understood just about everything on this site. Very informative and well laid out.

I do have a question that I can not seem to find an answer to anywhere. I have a 3590LM The quandry is this. In order to show the custom POI's that I have on the device, under MAP LAYERS tab, the PLACES ALONG THE ROAD selection must be checked. Ok, I get that.

However when checking that selection every single POI (including my custom ones) shows up on the map. Further once that is done, if I double tap the map screen while moving an Icon will come up in upper right hand corner that will allow me to "filter" my results and only show my POI as I want. However when the screen resumes the normal display this goes back to showing all again. Grrr. In other words it's not a permanent selection.

So question is this: How do I get ONLY my custom POI Locations and Icons to show up on the map as I am driving?

I dont need to know every gas station or restaurant while in motion, but to know where a safety camera is could be handy.

It's almost like the menu option Places along the road needs to drill down another directory and let us select which places along the road we would prefer to see. Any way to do it?

Thoughts? Thanks in advance. The Dogg.

@dogg

Welcome to the site.

There is a Getting Started button in the upper right of this page right under POI Files. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Beginner Education FAQs even though you are a PC technician.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394. I suppose with you I am preaching to the choir, but I'll do it anyway.

Now, about your question on seeing Custom POIs, let me say that for them to be of any service to you, you would have to look at them and that would distract you from driving. Plus, to see them you must be zoomed in to 200 feet or less.

I submit that what you really want are sound alerts to let you know when a safety camera is coming up.

Let us know how we can help you enjoy your GPS.

I have read your site top to

I have read your site top to bottom. This does not address my particular unit. I will look elsewhere.

Please report

If you find an answer, we would appreciate your reporting back to us. Thanks

I have a TomTom GPS, which may be very different than your Garmin, so my comment may be of no value, but I will make it just in case it heads you in a direction that is useful.

On my TomTom devices, the preloaded POI information is listed as a collection of files, organized by subject and named accordingly. (For example - Public Libraries, Cafes, etc.) When I load custom POI files, I do the same type of organization and naming, but those files are not merged with the preloaded files even though they have similar names.

To display any of the POI locations, I have to check the individual file names for the subjects, and to display both the preloaded information and my custom information I have to check both files. Accordingly, if I check "Mom & Pop BBQ" and do not check "Cafes", I will get my custom POI information for BBQ restaurants, but will not see any preloaded information about restaurants in general, even if some of those are BBQ joints that are not in my custom POI files.

With best wishes,
- Tom -
